The Yule Ball thing though is the typical "nerdy girl gets makeover, shocks friends by being secretly pretty" trope. Which implies that normally, Hermoine doesn't present herself as pretty (at least not until that point).

I agree that she doesn't normally present herself that way. I just don't know that I agree that the movies do present her that way. Compared to the effort someone like her would go through in real life, she definitely is. But for a woman in a movie? She seems about as un-made-up as they get to me unless the character is someone we're supposed to think is hideous.
