Accidental wank

I posted a secret a while ago, a fairly innocuous cutesy thing about how walking like Lara Croft when I was an awkward 12-year-old gave me super duper confidence. I thought it might attract a handful of "awww sweet, good for you" comments at best, but suddenly, a wild wank appeared! Turns out being empowered by gen 1 Lara is Not Okay. Maybe I'm naive, but I genuinely didn't see that one coming.

Have you ever posted what you thought was a boring secret that became a hidden wank grenade?

I once mentioned I liked a series of stories about a fox called Reynard. I got a blistering lecture about how they were based on old French folk tales that were racist and could be construed as also containing material relating to sexual activity involving children and so, even though the version I liked from my childhood had been utterly purged of all that racist and potentially pedophilic material, I had to be an evil racist pedophile. I had no idea the old medieval French material even existed either.

Oh wow, I think I remember those! The clever fox? I remember one about him trying to outsmart wolves... I don't remember anything racists as I don't remember any humans being in the story, but I come from a white privilege background so it's entirely possible 9 year old me overlooked it.

I'm pretty sure most of the Roman de Renart is about Reynart outsmarting Ysengrin, unless he's outsmarting Ysengrin's wife, Hercent. IIRC, King Noble, the lion, wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer either, and come to think of it, even Renart sometimes does dumb shit.

Renart is your typical underdog-trickster hero, like Compere Lapin in Afro-Creole folklore, and it's more about class than race--I think he's supposed to be a peasant, while Ysengrin is a noble or maybe cleric? And now that I think on it, maybe the reason OP's friend thought Reynard is full of racist stereotypes is that they were confusing it with the version of Compere Lapin (aka Beer Rabbit) from Disney's Song of the South.

Oh, that's fucking stupid. Raynard was a trickster, and sure he was from a time where some of his tales are a bit... iffy, but come on people, there's not a mythology out there that isn't a little iffy. There's not a gos damned thing wrong with liking that stuff.

i feel u, OP.

a handful of people here either have shitty reading comprehension or willfully misunderstand secrets just to bitch. i made a secret about not liking discussion of a character and her bff as lesbians because the character is explicitly shown to enjoy sex with men, so she'd be either bisexual or pansexual, and...an anon who didn't understand what the secret was actually saying got all snippy in the comments.

i was all for the idea of the character and her bff ending up together, i just hated that the fandom insisted on discussing them as potentially lesbian characters. but the show was canceled anyway, so it doesn't even matter.

Yes, but I don't remember the details of the wank. :P I made a secret about the movie Drive, and the comments were mostly people yelling at me for [something].

What I do remember is that whatever the text of my secret was, it wasn't even true. I had just wanted to start a conversation about Drive. Joke's on me, because being yelled at for something you didn't do is a sucky conversation.

I remember that one and got me very confused as to why people where wanking about it. But then again I did felt the same way as you, considering back in the day *shakes cane* female characters, let alone female character in videogames kicking ass and taking names where super rare. Same with Samus.
