So, does anyone know why they cast mostly British actors?

Wasn't the animated film supposed to be set in France (even though they had mostly American voice actors)?

I figured it's for the same reasons why British actors are cast in so many American TV shows and movies: decent acting skills + reasonable salary, it's good bang for your buck.

No, seriously, British actors are usually cheaper, because British TV pays less well and they're desperate to get to America (there are far more jobs in the US, particularly for black actors). So you can get a level of skill that you'd probably have to pay more for if you went for an American actor. It's not that Brits are naturally better actors, they're just cheaper.

*shrug* It's true, though. Most American actors don't receive anywhere near the amount of dramatic training that British ones do, probably because our system tends to reward good looks more than acting skills. Take a good look and see how many dramatic roles in American media are outsourced to the UK or Australia. There's a reason for that.

So this obviously isn't the case for British audiences, but to an American audience, a British accent is often shorthand for a bunch of weird class related shit. Like, unless it's a Cockney accent, Americans hear British accents and think "upper class." British accents also end up standing for "generic pan-European blob country" because Americans don't do well when asked to read subtitles and can't be arsed to learn anything but English. And if British accent =/= "generic pan-European blob country," then it's often used as a "generic fantasyland" accent. Sometimes both in one movie. Since British tv has a wider following here than it uses to, I think that's changing, but it might help explain the preponderance of Brits.

Okay, I guess. I could kind of see it if they had wanted a mostly American cast for the American audience, like the animated film. But if they were okay with a mostly British cast, why not some French actors also - there are French actors out there that are fluent in English and speak with French accents, and not, say, a guy from Scotland, figuring out a French accent. I'm not saying there's anything wrong someone doing an accent from another region, I liked Jerry Orbach as Lumiere, myself, just more wondering why Ewan MacGregor and not, like, Vincent Cassel or Jean Dujardin.

Oh, well that's surprisingly easy. Name recognition. More people who might otherwise pass on the live action cartoon will be pulled in by Ewan MacGregor than by Jean Dujaquedujean.
