Bad Political Opinions

Post yours here. Or that of someone you know, whatever.

I don't have a problem with birth control not being free. No reason not to treat it like any other prescription.

Re: Bad Political Opinions

Providing free birth control helps society save a shit ton of money (and lives). I would rather my taxes go to paying for cheap meds than paying for unwanted children of poor parents.

I want it to be free because there are so many people who just should. not. be. having. kids. And they keep having kids, and someone has to deal with them.

Before the ACA, most of the argument over the pill in the US was between those who wanted it to be treated like any other prescription, i.e. covered by your health insurance's prescription plan, and those who want those sluts to pay for their slut pills out of pocket, assuming they can find a pharmacy staffed with pharmacists who won't refuse to dispense them due to religious objections. Free birth control is a net benefit, health cost-wise, but even ensuring a reasonable copay is probably out the window come January.

I want the birth control pill to be accessible as possible, free or not, because there's too much religious pressure against it.

The pill has actual medical applications beyond even controlling birth, and I wish more people who were against it realized there are women who literally need it.

Re: Bad Political Opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-12-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
... except that unlike most prescriptions, free birth control has staggeringly huge economic and social benefit to the entire population. The returns we as a country would get are so ridiculously enormous that it's silly not to "invest" in it.

I haven't resolved this paradox:

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-12-06 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, democracy is terrible. I don't care if you're a genius and a brain surgeon, if politics, geography, and economics aren't your fields, then you are too ignorant to be able to make good political decisions.

On the other hand:
I have cursed at people who say that the poor and uneducated are too stupid to vote. I reflexively believe that everyone has a right to defend their interests as a voter, even though most of us get played for suckers over and over again.
And when I think about governmental reform, I compulsively look at more democratization: social democracy, proportional representation, and so forth.

I should know better!

Re: I haven't resolved this paradox:

(Anonymous) 2016-12-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It defeats the purpose of democracy if certain demographics don't count. But democracy is the great equalizer: it equalizes fact with falsehood and opinion. People have the right to defend their interests, but the way they vote does not always reflect that.

It's hard to think that someone who couldn't find America on a map and knows nothing about the government has the same vote as a person who is reasonably knowledgeable about politics, history, and science.

But hey, what's the alternative?

Re: I haven't resolved this paradox:

Well, it's been said that the best political system would probably be a benevolent dictatorship - the problem is that's not really possible, because there's nobody who should be trusted in that position.
Out of the political systems we've seen in the world, I'd say that democracy is probably one of the better ones. Socialism only really works in small groups.
Democracy is probably the lesser of evils.

Re: I haven't resolved this paradox:

(Anonymous) 2016-12-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I agree that the general dilemma you're outlining here is real and hard to figure out. But surely it's possible to make informed decisions about politics even if you're not a trained politician, geographer, or economist?

I'm support food stamps. But I am okay with the idea that they should only be used on certain kinds of foods (i.e. nutritious stuff, not soda pop and junk food).

I can get behind that. Like how WIC works.

So, sort of like W.I.C? I think you can only get foods on a list they provide on that program, and no substitutions (like when they say "Only 2% or Whole Milk" they mean it. You can't get ANY other kind of milk)

I'm a big supporter of one of the programs in my state, we have WIC and Senior Farmer's market checks. They can only be used to buy produce at farmer's markets. This way the food is fresh and it supports local farmers.

Since I know we can't give change for the checks, I'll work with the customers so they can get the most out of it. (They come in $5 or $10 denominations.)

That'd be cool...assuming most super markets had cheap enough healthy foods. They don't.

Also, there should be allowances from time to time to allow people to enjoy a small case of soda of some sort. Banning any and all poor people from that is...really really not fair.

There are kind of reasons poor people will buy junk food though, outside of even the addicting nature of junk food the fact is when someone is trying to make food last as long as possible for as cheap as possible, unhealthy food is one of your best options.

Anything that is overly processed is not exactly good for you but it'll keep the longest. Fresh fruit, veggies and meat are always going to go bad first and the grocery won't always carry a cheap option for anything fresh.

The working-class poor don't always have the time to cook either because they're working multiple jobs, and that can kind of kill any ability to make healthy meals.

It's just not a super straightforward problem, you may think that forcing healthy food would help people in the long run but it could actually hurt a lot of people.

Pacifism is a privileged ideology, and it only works if the other side is pacifist as well. If everybody else is fine waging war, pacifism is stupid and will just get you killed.

Re: Bad Political Opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-12-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think "pacifism" is a bad word to use, and in 99% of cases, "anti-war" is both more accurate to what the people involved actually think, and eliminates the obviously idiotic positions that the term "pacifism" implies.

But, yes, what you say is quite true.

It's not shocking that Americans have to pay for healthcare. Get back to me when nobody has to pay for food, and then I'll be shocked that one country makes you pay for one more life necessity than most others.

My father believes that Vietnam was a justified war in which America achieved its primary objective of keeping Soviet influence from spreading to other countries. He further believes that, were the American populace willing to stomach the losses, American troops could have stayed in Vietnam, won the war, and saved the anti-Communist locals from being massacred. He's still angry that America left them to die.
