Re: Freedom of speech

What do you mean?

First, Freedom of Speech only protects (with limits) you from the GOVERNMENT being able to make your speech a crime. It has nothing to do with what random citizens can do.

Secondly, someone yelling you are censoring doesn't mean you are. It is just a way to complain and shift attention.

Yes, that's what I think.

Neither I nor they have the power to censor anyone, and we aren't the government.

But they WANT me to stop expressing my opinion, but they know they can't make me. So they try to make me feel like I am censoring them if I do, so I should stop. Self-censor to avoid censoring them. And then they can speak, and I won't speak, so only their opinion gets spoken.

No one can make you feel anything. Own your emotions, or you're engaging in the same silly overreactions as them.

I said, they are trying to make me feel something. I was explaining what I think they are doing.

Not even sure what "own your emotions" means... do you mean control your emotions? I wasn't even really talking about emotions, maybe I should have said they are trying to make me think something.

I don't know how I overreacted, could you explain?

They can't make you do anything. They can't make you feel anything. They can't make you think anything. You are your own person, and that's what I mean by own your emotions. Rather than acting like someone's victimizing you when they're not, which is, ironically, exactly what they're accusing you of.

.... I didn't say they could make me feel anything, think anything, or do anything. I said I thought they were TRYING TO.

You seem to have gotten "someone is trying to make me feel something" and "someone is making me feel something" confused. You're coming off as the kind of person who thinks they have to keep repeating some statement until everyone finally gets it.

No one accused me of acting like someone is victimizing me. Did you mean to say that's what I was accusing them of?

Well, so what if they're TRYING TO?

Re: Freedom of speech

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, that's what I was saying they're trying to do?

I guess your point is, it was pointless for me to write out a description of what someone is doing, unless it really affects me. But sometimes I've found those things can be useful. So what, I guess.

They tell you this in kindergarten, and like a lot of things they say in kindergarten, it's not just bullshit, it's actively harmful. If you think that no one else can make you feel like shit, you can't fully recognize when other people do make you feel like shit. Instead of resolving or escaping the situation, you conclude that you must be making yourself feel like shit, and when ordering yourself to stop feeling things doesn't work, you make yourself feel even shittier over your supposed lack of self-control.

OK, enjoy your victimhood.

I certainly didn't. I was such a goddamn mess that if a door opened and I didn't know who was opening it, I would run out of the room in terror. I didn't get better until I got the fuck out of that situation, for the same reason you don't get better from burns by standing in a burning building.

Getting out of abusive situations is a necessity for one's mental health.

Surely you're not comparing that sort of terror to being disagreed with.
