Dunno, IMO the fairy queen's powers were quite a bit more badass than Aaro-whatever's (plus Renji couldn't use bankai for a while and Ishida's powers were useless). I still maintain that he was only defeated because Mayuri pretty much pulled some new powers out of his ass.

...but lol, Cpt Badtouch. xD

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Aah, that is true. The power gap between the two was nothing to sneeze at, but also remember this: Szayel just gave the boys a bad case of brainburn, Aroniero mindfucked Rukia to hell and back, and she still got her act together and beat his ass. Which also should give her some badass points, sez I.

Still, I get what you mean: there is a great deal of power difference between Novena and Octova (or however you say Eight in spanish), and perhaps it isn't as impressive that she kicked a weaker espadas ass. But did she not serve a purpose in that fight, didn't she still fight and held her ground? The gist of the secret, as I interpret it, is that the poster is upset that Rukia has been made useless, and I don't feel comfortable agreeing with that as long as Rukia actually has served a purpose in canon.

On another note, it felt like all of the Mayuri/Szayel fight was one big "I have a gun AHA but I have a machien gun AHA but I have a shotgun AHA but I have a rocket launcher AHA but I have a bomb AHA but I have etc etc AHA BUT I HAVE AN ATOMIC BOMB AHA BUT I HAVE AN ANTIMATTER BOMB", so really, Mayuri getting the final one-uppance by his daughters poisonous Matrix-time slowing vagina is something I am perfectly fine with accepting. And, well. He IS very much at one with his inner badtoucher, that Mayuri, so I think it fits him.

his daughters poisonous Matrix-time slowing vagina

I am officially dead from laughter here.

Although in retrospect, perhaps it should be "poisonous Matrix-time slowing WOMB", but hey, it's late where I am and I can't remember every little detail of that mindbender.

To tell the truth though, I actually liked that fight most of all Hueco Mundo fights just because it became so incredibly WEIRD. Also, I seem to remember someone posting this truly epic link that actually explained that the whole fight between Mayuri and Szayel is actually a parable of ancient Egyptian mythology, where it is said that two of their gods fought and one of them tries to sleep with the others wife (or daughter or... wife-daughter, since, you know, egyptians) and this somehow kills him. And somehow, knowing that this is Kubo getting his mythology geek on more than him pulling a lot of crap out of his ass just... softened my up to that fight. I still think it was very long and overdone, but there was at least some thought behind it, and not just Kubo throwing every crazy scientist idea he ever had into one big "I BET IF I ADD THIS IT'LL BE EVEN MORE AWESOMER, KILL YOUR DARLINGS IS FOR LOSERS!" kind of fight.

Haha, it's good to know I'm not alone with liking the Hueco Mundo fights because of their weirdness. I remember people getting all upset over kitty!Grimm - I loved kitty!Grimm and not only because I love all felines, but because it was so weird and fun. (I mean, here we have Ichigo mk.3, resident violent jerkass transforming into... a giant blue cat-thing with cute ears and KITTY PAWS, how awesome is that!)

A few months ago there was an interview with Kubo in WJ where he said he basically draws what he finds fun (okay, obviously that's not completely true, but anyway), and damn, it shows here. (My only problem is that he apparently also finds it fun to character rape Ishida every way he can. Dammit.)

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. I'm not saying she served no purpose (if we say that the purpose was eliminating an espada), and I agree that it was no small feat for her to defeat Aroniero (god, what a name) after all that mindfuck... still, it didn't really impress me exactly because the only thing Aroniero had against Rukia was Kaien. Imagine her running into someone else - not even Szayel or Grimm, but say, Zomari. (Okay, of course we know that she fought Aroniero exactly for this reason, but let's forget about that now. :D;;) So while she fought well for her power level, the fight was, I think, somewhat like Ishida's fight with Mayuri back in Soul Society - a good personal fight, but without much impact on the overall plot. (Because let's face it, Renji or Ichigo could've killed Aroniero with one arm tied back, and even Ishida shouldn't have had much problems with him, provided of course that Kubo remembered who he was that day. Poor Quincy boy. The only one I see losing to Aroniero is Chad but poor kid would lose to a kitten, anyway.)

As for the Szayel vs Mayuri fight, I loved it exactly for thas reason (even though I was kind of seething all the time for Ishida getting character raped - goddammit, is Mayuri ever going to get his comeuppance for all what he's done?). It was fun seeing such a fight instead of the usual HURR HURR MY BANKAI IS BIGGER!11

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, all true. Then again, too me it felt like... NO fight had any bearing on the plot really, because it was apparently Aizens plan to have half of his men murderized all along. So what I'm trying to say is that Rukia fighting what was essentially a useless fight doesn't upset me so much because everyone ELSE where also fighting a useless fight. In the end, none of their battles really mattered, which... makes me very frustratedreader overall, but it feels less like Rukia's fault, more like KT.

However, I don't really have a counterargument for the power-debate. That is just true, Rukia IS slipping behind the rest of them, sad as it is, and if that is what upsets people... I guess I can't really argue against them. Because hey, it's true and it sucks that KT doesn't want to put her on the same level as the others. No argument there.

And regarding the little Quincy who couldn't, I first thought the fans where being kinda whiny about that, since my line of thinking was "He's just been beaten all to hell and back, I'm sure he realizes that he's not in a position to start shit", and I still kinda feel that way... but then again, I also see how someone's who is a bigger fan than I am of the boy would be upset at his acceptance when he has so often before been defined as being very angry and reacting in a very emotional way to these things. I guess the reason I'm not complaining is that I, truth to be told, like him better when he knows when to shut up. I am a cruel man.

And yes, to answer both your second paragraph here and the comment above, I loved how damn WEIRD the fights could get. I mean, the crack capslock Bleach spun of Kittygrimm alone made it solid gold, and how it was basically a furry version of Gamma just made it better. Speaking of Mayuri, the way he and Urahara are being set up right now seems to me to indicate that they're behind the Vizard, and that if anyone kicks his ass it will be one of them. Or, KT will just defy tradition and just ALLOW Mayuri to get away with everything, because Soul Society needs him and that is that.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure, in the end it's all Kubo's fault. :D Still, the reason I think I understand the poster of the secret is that one reason I liked Rukia back then, before the Soul Society arc, was because she was weak - and not as she's now. She didn't have her powers, she was basically defenseless, and she was still a strong character without any trace of damsel-in-distressness. I really didn't like what happened to her during the Soul Society arc (all that angst and "hey, let's throw Rukia around like a sack of potatoes!"), and now she has her powers back - and she can't really do anything with them, yet she pulls these suicide stunts and of course gets defeated and needs to be rescued and worried about. (yay, grammar!) I appreciate a lot that she went to help Orihime (I also like them together, dammit), but I wonder if there couldn't have been any other way through which she could've been more effective. Frankly, I don't really want her to be stronger - I'd be really disappointed if suddenly she learned bankai or something. What I'd like to see is her realizing that she's weak compared to the rest of the gang, and dealing with the fact as she would've done back then when she had almost no powers at all. Or something.

As for Ishida, my biggest problem is not his easy acceptance or even that he can't fight the way he should be able to; it's that his antagonism toward Mayuri was very obviously played for comic relief, and that in the end he was not only civil to Mayuri, he even worried about his zanpakutou getting broken. It's like doing comedy sketches with Ichigo and the Grand Fisher, and Ichigo going "your tentacle-thing is broken, are you okay?" I understand that Ishida's story is not relevant in any way anymore, and as fan I'm probably overreacting, but still, it hurts a little to see this. Especially as I actually see Mayuri getting away with everything - I have a feeling he likes the character. (Which is alright, but...)
