I mean, no offense, but couldn't you follow approximately 3000 other sports manga / anime for that kind of a storyline

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not if they specifically want the ice skating and not 3000 other sports not as appealing, no.

Uh, no you can't? There is no other ice skating anime I am aware that follows a 23 year old adult through his career without any supernatural bullshit attached.

Most sports anime are about high-school aged boys and a lot of times put in superpower shonen battle elements. YOI is a pretty realistic take on ice skating and it's refreshing to have the two main characters be adults instead of teenagers.

Yet the fandom is more concerned with smut and porn than the characters on an individual level.

True of any fandom, ever.

I'm enjoying how the emotional story informs the development of the ice-skating programs.

Any fandom ever has smut and porn, and you shouldn't be surprised that that's the case in a show that's about hyper-fit, athletic-bodied young men.

But I think the fandom is RIDICULOUSLY interested in the characters. Even one-time characters who really should just be background noise get obsessed over. How in the world is being interested in smut mutually exclusive with interest in characters individually? They practically go hand in hand.

Are you kidding me? Have you not seen the novel-length essays written about minute details in the characters every time an episode comes out? People are absolutely obsessed with the characters as individuals.

Weird how you described 99.99% of fandoms ever.

But yeah agreed with above comments, there's actually A LOT of meta, fic, etc. on individual characters in this fandom; even minor characters.
