yeah yeah yeah genre-busting representation I know, but

I just really wish they'd focus more on the sport. I find Yuuri's professional struggle 300% more interesting than this weirdass relationship they tell me is a love story.

I really like the way they animate the skating. So pretty!

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a love story.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, no offense, but couldn't you follow approximately 3000 other sports manga / anime for that kind of a storyline

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not if they specifically want the ice skating and not 3000 other sports not as appealing, no.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no you can't? There is no other ice skating anime I am aware that follows a 23 year old adult through his career without any supernatural bullshit attached.

Most sports anime are about high-school aged boys and a lot of times put in superpower shonen battle elements. YOI is a pretty realistic take on ice skating and it's refreshing to have the two main characters be adults instead of teenagers.

Yet the fandom is more concerned with smut and porn than the characters on an individual level.

Even when this was announced, I had no expectation it ever would be a "proper" sports anime.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiousity, are there actually any 'proper' sports animes? I mean, things like Prince of Tennis, Free, Whistle, that rugby one whose name escapes atm...

They're all very... slice of life mixed in with sports? Like I've never seen a sports animes that are just like HERE IS YOUR SPORTS NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS.

But they do focus on the sport?

Thought they don't do it in the same way 99% sport anime/manga does, and they also focus on personal relationships and how those relationships affect the skaters. (Not just Yuuri and Victor's! Georgi, Michele and even Chris's skating are directly related to their relationships)

This isn't Free! or other slice of life show where the sport doesn't even matter that much.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
They fucking do man

Like the "raw" technical aspect of the show is important, like planning to do more or less rotations in jumps, how many technical points this and that will get you, how it will affect your global ranking. And for the ice skating noobs they even explained how the ISU Grand Prix worked!

And with Yuuri, Phichit and now Otabek the whole aspect of representing your country at international competition, and how it will affect foreigners' view of your country has been one of the topics of the show.

Like, it's just very complete, and it goes way beyond "I wanna be the very best" or "I wanna fuck my coach."

Yeah, this. The show DOES focus on skating. Basically every competitor, even one time characters, get full performance screen time. For me, I'd rather see more relationship, there is a TON of skating in this show for a 12 episode series.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you even watch Free! They literally swam in every episode. It was integral part of the plot, their lives, and goals. They focused on the friendship/teamwork relationships just as much (or maybe less) than YOI focuses on the love story between Victor and Yuuri. Free!'s focus on the team aspect because relays are a team effort and they emphasized having to sync with each other. Despite the insane ship wars there was never any 'queerbait' in Free! if you just take off the shipping goggles and view it for the teamwork anime it really is.

Free! wasn't perfect but I don't understand why YOI fangirls always try to make it less than it was. It was a sports anime and had some elements of SoL. YOI is the same shit yet only gets a pass because it made their OTP canon.

Exactly. I'm not sure what the OP wants?? There's skating in every episode, refining of elements and explanation of rules (more than you get in many of what the OP would probably call """""proper""""" sports anime), they even help newbies differentiate between the jump types and other elements and go deep into explanations of the judging rules and why one skater scored higher than another or what happens when two skaters tie.

This IS a sports anime. It's also a romance. It's also a slice-of-life. It's also rife with character development and relatable characters.

So you want the show to focus just on ice skating with no mention of interpersonal relationships? 'Cause the show does devote a lot of time to the technical aspects of the sport, how skaters are scored, and their reasons for skating. I personally loved how it's made clear that Yuuri's not a genius skater, but a very hard worker and, even though he's very skilled, he's not immune to disappointments and anxiety attacks. The skating scenes are very beautiful and there's a lot of heart in those scenes.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As a hardcore sports anime fan, yes yes yes.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Are we watching the same show? Most of the episodes are dedicated to talking about skating or showing performances.

I've noticed the amount of time given to Yuri's internal narration of events, feelings, and perspectives is perhaps a bit more lacking than I am used to for these types of shows, maybe that's what you mean? I feel like this series is a bit more show than tell. But it absolutely does focus primarily on the sport.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-10 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I did kinda like Victor and Yuuri's relationship in episode 7 (the one with Yuuri freaking out and Victor not knowing how to deal with it). But their relationship has become so idealized or fanservice-y it just feels fake.

I am glad they showed two guys get engaged, it's amazing and progressive. However I'm really not crazy about how their relationship is portrayed which is definitely an unpopular opinion.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It feels idealized to you because the author explicitly created a world where there is no such thing as homophobia. She said in a tweet after Episode 10, where they got engaged, that the world in which YOI is set is one where no one will ever be judged or criticized for who they love, and that she will ensure it stays that way at all costs.

It's essentially just like every other het ship now, because it doesn't matter to their friends and family or ANYONE that they're both guys. Love wins, in every respect.

Sorry that bores you or feels 'fake'.

I'm definitely feeling like the odd one out being more interested in Yurio ... I mean, I'm glad they're doing what they did with Victuuri (the writing has been kinda wonky sometimes, though), but after every episode my dash is FLOODED with them (art, gifs, (cringeworthy) meta) and I have to really dig for some Yurio (except that he now also has some ship going on? Idk, I missed the last two episodes...)

I do continue to be very annoyed with the fandom tearing down shonen-ai/yaoi as a whole genre, though.

They spend so much time on skating though? Like are you sure you're not confusing fandom with canon? Not only do we see Yuuri skating a lot, but we see almost full programs from most of his competitors. The show goes out of its way to go into the sport in depth; rules, regulations, technicalities, etc. It focuses on the sport itself every bit as much as any other sports anime. It shows it as tough and intense, despite the glitter, with the skaters looking battered and exhausted at the end of every program. I got into the show first and foremost because figure skating has been my favorite sport since I was a kid and I am super into it, and I've been very satisfied with the amount of screentime it's gotten. The focus on Yuuri's skating and career is abundant. It's really only the most recent episode that dedicated a lot of time to not-skating.

The interpersonal relationships are important, but that's always the case in sports anime. That in this case, it's a romance instead of a hot-blooded friendship story like it usually is, is just different.

The way you've phrased this makes it sound like you haven't watched that far. Many of the episodes have a lot of focus on the skating.

I love the skating parts, so the ideal for me would be to have even more than we currently do. But not with less of the relationship stuff - just, like, more. (I want to see the complete versions of everyone's programs!) But for that, it'd require much longer episodes, heh.
