Even when this was announced, I had no expectation it ever would be a "proper" sports anime.

Out of curiousity, are there actually any 'proper' sports animes? I mean, things like Prince of Tennis, Free, Whistle, that rugby one whose name escapes atm...

They're all very... slice of life mixed in with sports? Like I've never seen a sports animes that are just like HERE IS YOUR SPORTS NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS.

You haven't seen any because HERE IS YOUR SPORTS NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS is a definition that you made up for yourself.

Okay... that was kind of aggressive... I was just asking what anon-I-replied-to defined as 'proper' sports anime, because YOI is about on par with the sports/life/character balance I've seen in almost every sports anime I've watched.

Calm down before you burst something over there.

I think a major difference is a lot of sports animes are team sports, which means a lot of camaraderie and intensity within friendships that's not necessarily romantic. Since Yuri on Ice deals with a singular sport, it's a bit hard to get the same stuff.

I love the intensity tho. Give me the tears of joy with the sun glaring down from above
