Actually the current Gundam series (Iron-Blooded Orphans) deals very explicitly with the idea of child soldiers, as the majority of the cast is made up of them. I don't think I've seen a lot of drama about it, though I don't think the fandom is that big and the subject is treated pretty seriously in canon.
