Look... I don't want to be political but "it was creepy that I had a crush on a woman" is really the least of our worries isn't it?

I didn't have a crush on a woman. I couldn't crush on the character when played by an adult woman. And I thought it was weird.

Also, what is this site for if not to complain about fandom things? It's not Politcal!Secrets is it?

You, though, are complaining, rather ridiculously, that the original traditional and usual stage casting of an iconic character is "shitty" because you had a crush on an idealised small boy. Good luck with that!

No. Let me break it down for you (troll). If a little BOY had a crush on ARIEL (another idealized character people crush on when growing up!!!), and the "live" version was played by A GROWN MAN...that wouldn't be a bit weird?? But because genders are reversed it's NOT weird fro the kid with teh crush right.

It is part of a broader older stage tradition of gender-swapped casting and is entirely appropriate for an Edwardian-era play, which is what it is. You can't realistically compare it to a late 20th Century Disney cartoon film. It's not a like for like comparison. Stick to Disney if you can't cope with different performance styles and traditions. Just don't deem things you don't understand or appreciate to be "shitty" simply because you personally find them uncomfortable. It makes you look ignorant.

Not if there was a theatrical/artistic reason for it? Like, if you had a cute cartoon movie based less-loosely on a Shakespeare play than the Lion Kings, and a little boy got a crush on Juliet or Beatrice or whoever, and then someone wanted to stage an all-male performance because they wanted to replicate the original acting conventions of the Elizabethan stage, of course those roles would be played by men. It's not creepy, it's just different. It's fine if you don't like it, but your squick at being unable to separate different versions of a character doesn't make it a bad casting choice.

it's weird that you care so much, but no if a man was playing Ariel I wouldn't find that "weird" if the casting director had a reason to do so.

It took me a second to realize you meant the mermaid, because I've seen Ariel the Tempest character cast as a guy, a girl, and there's productions out there that're an offstage actor or actress providing the voice for a lighting effect.

I used to post on the same site as a Platonist monarchist who wanted America to be ruled by a philosopher king. He once posted that crossdressers personally offended him, because he was only interested in flirting with someone who could potentially bear his child, so it offended him when someone who could not bear his child dressed in a way that made him want to flirt with them. This is the only thing I can think of while trying to follow your logic.
