Petra Pan

[personal profile] crossy_woad 2016-12-14 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It might be kind of understandable but I think it's kind of shitty. That's why I appreciated that the more recent movie adaptations used young actors in the young roles, instead of a woman as a little boy.

For me at least, Peter Pan was an early crush. Just a cool, fun, cute BOY character. To watch the "live" version and find my fave was played by an adult woman just...I hated that.

I don't know, wouldn't it be a *little* disturbing if a female character that a lot of young boys crush on at that age was consistently played by an adult man, because "that just makes more sense?"

I don't care if it makes sense, damn it. I didn't want my crush played by an adult of the opposite gender! :(

Peter has been played by a woman since the very first production in 1904. And if you read "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" it's very clear that Peter is actually a dead baby who tries to return to his mother only to find he's been replaced by a new baby and forgotten. Peter Pan is great stuff, but cute and fun? Sure about that?

I never read the original, just enjoyed adaptations as a kid. Children's books, movies, you know. I really don't want to hear your critiques of my taste, thanks.

I gave you some brief info about the original works (which were written for children, as it goes - you're not having your cosy kid-lit bubble burst here). Sorry you're not interested in learning more about the origins of your favourite character - other readers might be, so feel free not participate further in a discussion you started, but allow for the fact that it may well interest others. It's entirely your loss - the best and most enduring works for children have a streak of darkness in them.

Wasn't the actress who played Mrs. Darling originally supposed to play Hook? I know it's always been the actor who plays Mr. Darling, but I know I read that somewhere.

Also I'm a counter example to the person with the Peter crush; little me gave no shits about cartoon Hook but I remember I found Dustin Hoffman's Hook fascinating. And then of course when I was already an adult there was Jason Isaacs' Hook, but I have a hard time imagining anyone anywhere wouldn't find him attractive in the role. But even little me didn't expect to find every iteration of my fictional crushes attractive; hell, OUAT's Hook makes my skin crawl even though the actor is handsome and seems like a nice guy.

I absolutely love Hook and the whole Mr Darling dual role thing; I think he's such a fascinating character. They did it very well in the 2003 movie, which is probably the best screen adaptation so far, and certainly the most faithful. (And yes, OUAT Hook has nothing whatsoever to do with the Peter Pan character.)

Haha, this reminded me of the Ember Island Players in AtlA when Aang got mad because they cast a woman to play him and he was like "I am not a woman!"

Re: Petra Pan

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2016-12-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
As a kid, I went to multiple shows with pants roles and more. Just as I had no trouble believing that a lighting tech and a percussionist was a fairy, or that an adult woman was Clara in the nutcracker, or that an oboe was a duck in Peter and the Wolf, I had no problems buying that an athletic soprano was Peter Pan.

Yes you couldn't get your jollies watching a woman instead of a small boy and that made it bad casting. We get it.

I didn't have a crush on a woman. I couldn't crush on the character when played by an adult woman. And I thought it was weird.

Also, what is this site for if not to complain about fandom things? It's not Politcal!Secrets is it?

Re: Petra Pan

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
You, though, are complaining, rather ridiculously, that the original traditional and usual stage casting of an iconic character is "shitty" because you had a crush on an idealised small boy. Good luck with that!

I used to post on the same site as a Platonist monarchist who wanted America to be ruled by a philosopher king. He once posted that crossdressers personally offended him, because he was only interested in flirting with someone who could potentially bear his child, so it offended him when someone who could not bear his child dressed in a way that made him want to flirt with them. This is the only thing I can think of while trying to follow your logic.

Re: Petra Pan

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I... don't really get how having a fictional crush played by someone of the "wrong" gender or age is creepy. Like, if it makes them less convincing in the role, that's one thing. But it sounds like, idk, you were mad that you couldn't crush on live action Peter because he was played by a woman? Like "is this actor/actress acceptable first crush material?" really isn't the first thing people think of when casting children's book adaptations. One of my first crushes was Simba (and no, I'm not a furry) but I'm also not disappointed that his voice actors weren't actually lions.

well as a small kid it made me unhappy

Re: Petra Pan

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
See, "it made me unhappy" is different from "it's shitty". The first is you acknowledging that it's your interpretation and your own problem to deal with. The second implies fault on the part of the author or casting director or whoever for making that casting choice - you're blaming them for your hang-up. If you'd started with "it made me unhappy" you would have saved yourself all this drama instead of making out like the production was flawed and then pitching a fit and calling names whenever anyone tried to explain the rationale behind the casting to you.

NA

Lol did you sit on a wasp tonight or something? You are being hilariously butthurt about all this.

Chill the fuck out. Everyone has brought up interesting snipets of the history behind the character and the role, but all you have contributed is "omg he was played by a woman and that's SO WEIRD RITE GUIZ!?" and now you're pissed you got called out on it.

No, it's not weird, and no it's not weird if a little boy's first crush happened to be fucking Edna for a perfect example and the role is played by a drag queen. Why is this such a mindbreaking issue for you?

Yo I don't understand why everyone is jumping up your ass. I understand you. You were a little kid hoping to see a character you loved, but instead was greeted by someone who didn't fit the description at all. Seeing a taped version of the Peter Pan play threw me off when I was a kid too. A grown woman playing Peter was incorrect, and it bothered tiny, simple me. Kids don't give understand things like child labor laws, or give a shit about artistic license. You were disappointed, and you're entitled to those feelings. Everyone in this thread who's clutching their pearls over your hyperbolic descriptive words needs to get off their high horses.
