Fandom Regrets

(Anonymous) 2016-12-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Whether recent or back when people were speculating what would happen in the last Star Wars movie.

Re: Fandom Regrets

- I believed 1/2 of a story that was part of a HUGE wankstorm at a website, and would have joined the new website if it had ever been created. (Nothing ever came of it.) I learned at least some people at the website I went to judged me pretty hard for it, too.

- I wish I hadn't let roleplaying dominate some of my friendships. Once we stopped having roleplaying, we kind of... didn't have anything anymore.

- I once made fun of someone because I assumed they were a troll. Turned out they were serious, and just... didn't express themselves very well.

I enjoyed BBC Sherlock and the shipping until whatever the fuck the JohnLock Club is came about and went batshit. I haven't seen an episode since. Which I guess is no biggie since they only put 3 episodes out every 3-5 years.

That brief moment when Sherlock was fun and exciting before the shit hit the fan. By brief moment, I mean like. A blink of a fannish eye...

Same, w/o the shipping. I liked Hounds of Baskerville but after the Fall of whatever I stopped.

I still enjoy the show, I just never touch the fandom anymore (I read some fic and that's it).

There was a Heroes forum when the show first came on, and I was a total bitch about all the people using netspeak. I told them it was immature, even had an icon that said "U is not a word..." I was awful.

What's nuts is that for some forsaken reason, I honestly thought I was being helpful. That I was guiding them towards being better forum users or something. Now I realize I just made them feel stupid. I tried apologizing a few years later, but NBC had rebooted the forum and it seemed to be all new members.

I regret getting a shitty (now ex) friend of mine into a game I adore, Sheryl out of desperation to get her to stop talking about Supernatural. Asking nicely didn't help, telling her I was never going to be interested in SPN didn't help, so my logic was: if she's into something else then at least we'll have something we can both talk about.

Then she got the characterizations of the characters massively wrong, and then we had a huge falling out, so now the whole thing is kind of tainted. I can't love that game the same way I did. :(

SA

Sheerly...out of desperation...

Not Sheryl...

Damn you autocorrect.

Ugh, that sucks. :(

Back when I was just starting to write, one of my stories was nominated for a fandom award and I was asked to participate in the awards ceremony. At the time, I had dial-up and I have always been technologically backwards so I declined because I didn't know how it would work, which I think meant I declined having my fic being in contention. I've always felt I missed a chance to make some friends in my fandom because of that.

I regret letting toxic anime fans influence me when I was younger. I was around a lot of people that bullied others in fandom and of course they would turn it on me as well and I would just let them.

I have always had issues with mental health and fandom helped me survive and I met a lot of nice people (and even of some of the bullies they ended up growing up since then) but I wish I could have figured out some way to not get in so deep with that crowd.

Every time I ever rushed to judgement or to mock someone or any of the other groupthink bullshit I ever did. From Fandom Wank to some uncharitable things I said about certain Trump supporters.

I'm trying to be better, but I can be such a cunt sometimes.

I wasn't involved with FW directly but I was friends with a lot of people who were. Except I realize now that some of them were just as bad, and I often joined them in the badness. I also got mean other places, I think, because I was so used to that personality.

I lurked during the whole span of SGA's popularity, and looking back now, I probably could've written some fic and made some friends if I'd actually tried. Shoulda coulda woulda, and all that.

I regret ever looking up to one of the BNFs in one of my fandoms after I met her shitbag friend. RPing with them as well...that made me realize how much of a hack writer the BNF was.

I regret looking up to two BNFs in my secondary fandom. They had a falling-out, and I picked a side at the time (not publicly). Now I've realized that I take issue with both of them, but for very different reasons.

Codependent fandom friendships that ended horribly.

That I was ever involved in ship wars (pretty much just Harry Potter, I was over ship wars by the time I got into anything else where there were ship battles).

Re: Fandom Regrets

(Anonymous) 2016-12-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it was really hard not to be involved with ship wars in the Harry Potter fandom, unless you stuck with fanfiction.net and the smaller sites. I got pulled in a few times, even though I never really cared who shipped H/Hr versus R/Hr. (Although I had a pretty huge intolerance against Harry/Draco. Even then, so many of my friends shipped it that I didn't bother arguing.)

Probably any attempts to promote peaceful co-existence among opposite sides of a ship war or pro-slash vs. anti-slash or any other item of fandom strife. It just wasn't that important.

I regret not getting to know the newer or younger people in my first fandom forum better. I didn't realise that there were so many lurking who didn't feel like they were part of the group and as a result were shy about posting.

I met a few of them later in person when I was less active posting and after I stopped altogether, and they all thanked me for being one of the nicer members of a group who had some other members who only interacted with people who'd been around for a certain period of time. I keep in touch with some of them but I still feel bad that these people didn't get to participate in things because of the attitudes of one or two adults.

I always regret not being more active in the fandoms I'm in. Nowadays I just don't have a lot of time for it, but I could still do more. When I was younger I had so much time, but i was too afraid that either my English was too bad or that my quality just wasn't good enough. There's so much fanart on my computers that I was proud of, that I should have posted, but I never did.

I regret never finishing any of my HP fics.
