I also love soulbond fics where the pairing starts out at odds and has to work through their issues.
After RPing at least one storyline that did feel a bit like the bond caused the romance, I started playing storylines where my character had only a vague idea of who her soulmate was. It's a lot better because in one timeline she's had time to get to know him without knowing beforehand, making the development feel more realistic and organic, and in another she ended up with someone else and a pending threesome.

If I'm reading a soulmate fic and I feel like the pairing's soulmatedness is this fully formed and completely overriding program just waiting to get turned on inside of them, that bores and/or squicks me.
I like it when there's some kind of a connection right away, but that connection is kind of weird and ambiguous for the characters, and from there their relationship has to develop and go through twists and turns and all that good stuff.
