I mean, if this author's original story was good enough that OP got invested (which it sounds like it was, since OP is mad they don't get to finish it), then OP should have no problem PAYING a small sum of money for the pleasure of finishing it. I'd say the author deserves that much.

Or they can not pay. But either way, the choice is on OP.
