Had a conversation today with someone who said that if someone is riding their bumper while driving they lower their speed to about 10mph. Even on a highway. Because "I've got kids and someone riding my ass might rear end me!!!"

But going 10mph on a highway will end merrily. >.>

Especially not if you lower your speed too quickly!

Also: highways often have minimum speed limits (barring conditions where you *can't* safely drive faster) so you could get a ticket for driving that slow.

They're afraid of being rear ended so they make it even more likely for that to happen?

I think they're depending on the asshole tailgater to show some decency and slow down. Which might work, assuming the tailgater in question has the decency to slow down or pass. I dunno, some idiots never get the message.

And slowing 10 mph is just stupid and dangerous. Slowing down 5, I could see (but not to 5!).

I have trouble picturing someone slowing down that much in a way that doesn't dangerously surprise the person behind them, if they're in the middle of a highway.

And it probably will end badly.

If you do that on the highway, you are going to cause an accident. That is the most likely outcome. There is a reason highways have minimum speeds.

Minimum speed limits vary from state to state. Besides, I said slow down 5, not slow down TO 5.

Speed limits are set by the state and vary wildly. Many states don't have minimum speed limits at all.

I don't go that slow, but I do slow down in the hopes that the asshole will just go around me. If I slow down, it creates space between me and the car in front of me in order to give the jerk space to move in. Tailgaters scare the crap out of me and make me drive badly because all my focus is just on them, and I want them away from me.

I do this, too. Just take my foot off the gas and start coasting. They generally get the picture and go around. I despise tailgaters.

I did that once. He drove right up close behind me and put his headlights on beam. Yay.
