Asking the boyfriend if he could tell me when he's busy so I know not to expect a reply anytime soon and him telling me things are getting intense too fast. I am hoping he is merely stressed and just reacted badly.

Eh. Sounds like a bad sign to me. Your request wasn't unreasonable, but he's acting as if you're pestering him about names for your future children. Personally, I'd wonder what his reaction would be if you ever needed something that required more than a token minimal effort on his part.
