How do you safely get rid of a large amount (about half a gallon)?

There are depots that collect used cooking oil to turn it into biodiesel. Try googling what's available in your area for cooking oil recycling.

Pour it into a used milk carton, tape it shut and throw it into trash. That's what we are told to do, anyway.

Yep, that is how I was taught when you don't have an easy recycling place to use.

If you still have the container(s) it came in, pour it back in, reseal, and throw away? Or wait until you have an empty milk/juice/water jug with a cap and use that?
