Apparently, at one point, the writing team discussed having Inara killed by Reavers. Reavers being Reavers, this would have been a horrible, horrible way for her to die, on several levels. I've never heard anything that suggested that this went beyond "It came up once and we decided not to", but I haven't followed the interviews and panels as closely as some.

I also heard she was dying. Not sure how related it was to the Reaver thing?

From what I remember, she wasn't going to be killed, just be raped by them. And she would have injected herself with something that killed all the Reavers who raped her. And also she was supposed to have some sort of disease and was dying, I think.

Yes, and then when Mal found her surrounded by dead Reavers, but alive, that was when he "forgave" her for her profession and the catalyst for them getting together.

I thought she was going to be found by a pile of dead Reavers, because she has something in her to kill anyone who rapes her.
