And those plans were?

[Not OP]
[CW - rape, violence, murder, cannibalism]

Apparently, at one point, the writing team discussed having Inara killed by Reavers. Reavers being Reavers, this would have been a horrible, horrible way for her to die, on several levels. I've never heard anything that suggested that this went beyond "It came up once and we decided not to", but I haven't followed the interviews and panels as closely as some.

I also heard she was dying. Not sure how related it was to the Reaver thing?

From what I remember, she wasn't going to be killed, just be raped by them. And she would have injected herself with something that killed all the Reavers who raped her. And also she was supposed to have some sort of disease and was dying, I think.

I thought she was going to be found by a pile of dead Reavers, because she has something in her to kill anyone who rapes her.

Raped to death by space zombies then eaten by space zombies.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I think the Reaver thing is a little much for most of the fans I know.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*snort* Not really. I once wrote a horror fic where everyone but Jayne was killed by Reavers, and we close on him cutting his face. It was very well-received.

Serenity was going to be boarded by Reavers. Mal was going to race to Inara's shuttle knowing he'd be too late....and find her gang-raped but alive under a pile of dead Reavers, after using a genetically engineered sexually transmitted virus that Companions use as assassins. (in the reaver ep that aired, Inara gets out a syringe and looks at it)

I can see how that fits JW's favorite 'turn the cliché victim into the victor' trope, but it was a tasteless idea.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fan of rape & revenge tropes, I kinda like this, but holy shit yeah it's really in poor taste. Some things might work best confined to fanfic or exploitation flicks.

Huh (regarding the syringe). I just thought she was considering using it on herself (suicide) if the Reavers actually caught them instead of...you know. Being raped to death and then worn as clothes by the Reavers (or vice versa if she's not so lucky as Zoe might say).

That kind of shows you how bad the whole anti-sjw thing is. You're afraid to express a dislike of having a female character gang raped to death is somehow a little too social justicey, because only some special snowflake tumblrina would object to that, amirite?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly same.
I think most anti-sjw are worse than the "sjw" they claim to hate so much imo.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can't be bothered by ideas that never make it out of the planning stage and most certainly never would have made it to air even the Joss and his merry man had been all "let's do THIS!" about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
+1 I've only ever heard rumors about these supposed ideas and even in this thread the rumors seem to be conflicting one another.

It never made it in the show, in the movie or in the comics so I really can't be bothered by it.

I remember hearing it wasn't Joss but some idea the was being floated by the team?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
.. and an idea that did not make it out of the pitch, to boot.

Sheesh. Some people really work to make sure that everything is problemmatic, don't they?

Makes me glad Firefly only got one season.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the "Bring Firefly Back!" crowd don't get that one of the reasons it's so beloved is because it only had the one (half?) season. It never had a chance to leave the honeymoon stage.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still in denial. Rumours! Rumours I say!

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a woman and a proud feminist and I have zero qualms with rape being used in fiction as a plot point. I am totally fine with the potential rape storyline in Firefly and think it would have been scary and interesting.

I think it's boggling that people have this reaction that any rape in fiction is bad (except when it's Game of Thrones, then it's ~realistic~). There's obviously exploitative rape, and rape that's done poorly and in an extremely gross way, but it's amazing how people are okay with murder and torture but somehow decide to jump on the moral high-horse in regards to rape. Rape can be part of dark, serious storylines, just like any other terrible event.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think that rape can be used in stories but the proposed storyline for Inara sounded really bad and stupid and not like a good idea. I think it's bad to have bad storylines, and I think using rape in really bad stupid storylines is particularly bad.

There are shades of grey here, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are just reacting to the overall trend of the fact that rape is often used as a writing tactic to create a dark storyline that is almost always specifically targeted at women. It's the type of trope that can be boring or even offensive depending on how it's written.

That being said, I'm also not against rape in storytelling but I think writers should sometimes take a moment to think about if they're just doing something that has been done 5 million times before and if the plot is going to revolve around a female character, why? Basically I want writers to ask themselves if they really need that rape scene, if it really furthers the plot in a significant manner or if it's something they could live without.

And Game of Thrones gets called out for it's excessive rape all the time, I like Game of Thrones but I definitely think they could have had a few less rape scenes then they did.
