Minor spoilers based on conversations with JKR

I really can't stand the idea of seeing JD in another movie with a stupid haircut and some kooky over the top acting. And I really, really can't see him as menacing.

Farrell set out some fantastic and menacing groundwork that I can't see Depp being able to continue.

Also, bless fandom and their ability to completely ignore canon.

MINOR SPOILERS

Also, I have been pretty on the side of let the author do what she wants, it is her world. But she said in an interview that Gridenwald isn't using Polyjuice Potion and Graves never existed. Which makes zero sense to me. How does Graves have this whole life and past? Has Grindenwald been living a complete double life for his and Graves's entire life??

I would think that someone at the WB would be like, "Hey...I know you are an awesome author. But people really seem to like Farrell and his character...could we maybe bring him back somehow? Because of the money."

Yeah, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How do you pull that off in a small wizarding community? Unless he took someone's name or something?

Especially in the American wizarding community which seems extremely strict and controlling.

Well they were trying to find out his background and couldn't so maybe there was nothing to find.

Wouldn't that throw up red flags in the magical version of the FBI/CIA?

I read that she stated Grindle was using a spell rather than polyjuice to take his appearance, not that he never existed because as you've said that would not make any sense especially given that Grindle's interest in being in NY is entirely focused on finding the obscurantism, also how would you fake yourself into being the director of the wizard-cops if you've only been in MACUSA for a few years(tho honestly I don't think Grindle was in the US for more than a year).

Either way I'll go with Graves being a real dude even if he is most likely dead.

Oh! I hope that is true. I really want to see more Graves. I had heard rumors that Farrell was signed on for another movie.

Yeah everything I've seen on the matter, unless something new came out in the last day or so, was that Grindle was using a spell to take Graves appearance, not that he was a made-up persona. And from what I've seen in fandom the Graves family is even mentioned in Pottermore as one of the first wizarding families to go over to the States, so making up a member of that family without is seeming incredibly suspicious would be... tricky.

Much as I'd like to see him in the movies again I sadly doubt it'll happen, the contract thing if true is more than likely the studio covering the ass just in case they want/need him again. BUT WE DO NEED HIM AGAIN(ffs I just want Colin Farrel strutting around in suits looking hot some more, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK).

Right? He was so damn hot with those suits. And he looked WAY better with that haircut than JD's...whatever that was on his head.

That whole outfit was just Yes, thank you whoever decided on it. Like I find him hot anyway but damn.

Johnny Depp's hair is like an exaggerated version of Richard Spencer's.

Sometimes known as the Hitler Youth haircut.

Though obviously, it's trendy right now in general, usually as a kind of "alternative" look. But presumably people like Richard Spencer chose it because of its popularity in the 40s.
