06. [SPOILERS for Fantastic Beasts]

Um, I'm happy with it?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Not trying to be sarcastic or passive-aggressive or anything, just wondering why you're happy with it? Most people I've seen who don't actively dislike Depp still didn't seem to like his appearance in Fantastic Beasts, you see.

Most people don't care, the people who are upset are fans of Amazing Amy Amber.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Every podcast I listened to that mentioned the movie (or reviewed it), talked about how tired they are of Depp

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Johnny Depp's career has been a joke for years now even if you leave aside his personal life

I haven't seen Johnny Depp in anything recent but the feeling of overexposure started years and years ago for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Saaaaame, I'm just... really bored of him? Maybe it's because the first Pirates movie came out when I was 12, so I spent my whole teen years [and after] getting him shoved in my face.

I've not liked seeing him in movies since the first POTC movie.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite their overwhelming whiteness (and the inevitable "remedy" that will be one light complexioned person of color in later movies), I was willing to buy a ticket...until it was revealed he had been cast.

Another month and we should have a good HD rip.

I used to think Johnny Depp was hot and Colin Farrell was ugly. In this movie it was the reverse... some people age better than others. (And I know Depp wasn't meant to be hot as Grindelwald, he just really hasn't aged well in general.)

I didn't realize the hate was so unanimous. Johnny Depp had quite the cult following before POTC finally made him a box office winner. It could be worse. He's playing the wizard version of Hitler and not a beloved character from the franchise. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate him! I'm just tired of him.

I think the only movie I'd be willing to watch him in is something where he plays a boring middle class office worker or something, except "a normal person" seems to be the one thing he can't convincingly act as.

I didn't know people being tired of him was so common. I keep seeing people say this exact thing. But I can't think of that many films I've actually seen him in.

But I don't get tired of anything in that way like a normal person, so the whole concept is just kind of baffling to me. I can listen to a song on repeat for 12 hours and like it just as much at the end as I did in the beginning.

He's been in so many films, though.

The thing is that it feels like he kept the cult image around long after it had stopped being an actual thing. It feels like it's still part of his persona that he does weird, cool shit, and he gets cast in all this stuff because of how weird and cool he is. But in fact, most of the shit he's done in the last 5 years has just been bad, and he seems like a pale lifeless imitation of how cool he used to be, but directors still think we see him that way.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Not hate, just sick of him being put in so many big movies.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm confused because I've never heard anyone complain about Alec Baldwin being in things.

Minor spoilers based on conversations with JKR

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-12-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't stand the idea of seeing JD in another movie with a stupid haircut and some kooky over the top acting. And I really, really can't see him as menacing.

Farrell set out some fantastic and menacing groundwork that I can't see Depp being able to continue.

Also, bless fandom and their ability to completely ignore canon.

MINOR SPOILERS

Also, I have been pretty on the side of let the author do what she wants, it is her world. But she said in an interview that Gridenwald isn't using Polyjuice Potion and Graves never existed. Which makes zero sense to me. How does Graves have this whole life and past? Has Grindenwald been living a complete double life for his and Graves's entire life??

I would think that someone at the WB would be like, "Hey...I know you are an awesome author. But people really seem to like Farrell and his character...could we maybe bring him back somehow? Because of the money."

Yeah, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How do you pull that off in a small wizarding community? Unless he took someone's name or something?

I don't hate or love the casting at the moment tbh, I have to see what his character is like before I have much of an opinion on it. I do hope it's not just Jack Sparrow with magic though.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was delighted to see him. I love JD.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have minded so much if he didn't look so bloated and ugly. It's like he's suddenly aged 10 years.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The salt runs deep indeed,

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I used to like Depp but him and Burton just make me sigh.

Cannot say much how he will play the character in future as this is an unwritten part - what bothered me was plot holes and time skips. He was 40ish in the film, looks 60ish (fair enough, people age differently) but his whole face structure seems different and he could have changed it but seems others recognised him.

As for Graves - I recall him being mentioned as dead and he has been the head of enforcement department before dying. Still, Grindelwald does not seem to have restraint in his views, of course Graves could have had similar but I doubt he went around city and manipulated kids for gain in a very obvious manner.

Because he was cast and such a big star while watching the movie people were wondering where is he where is he? And I think that spoiled the movie for some people. Then because he was cast for a secret role it came out who he was playing in the Press I personally was spoiled before I ever saw the movie
