AYRT - Wait, seriously? I thought people were joking about that.

I mean, there was like 130 million votes cast.

AYRT - ... oh, people. What idiots.

http://www.snopes.com/harambe-15000-votes/

"Reports that Harambe the deceased gorilla received thousands of votes in the 2016 U.S. presidential election were fake news.

We don't know how many people voted for Harambe during the presidential election. But anyone claiming that "15,000" (or any other number of) people voted for the deceased gorilla is repeating a false claim."

One vote is too many, though. It doesn't have to be 15K people to be a stupid thing to do.

Yeah but people do stupid things every day. Let's be real about it, the dozens! of people who might have voted Harambe were going to vote for Deez Nuts, something equally stupid, or no one regardless. Focusing attention on it like it's important only feeds the fake news.

I'm not sure I agree with your contention that because lots of people do stupid stuff everyday, we shouldn't note individual acts of stupidity. Do keep in mind that this is one thread on a DW community frequented by a relatively small number of people, so I'm not sure how this is to blame for the media and modern journalism being crap.

Re: 2016 confessions & unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, that wasn't my point. My point was that people vote stupid pointless things in every election. Some of those things happening to be Harambe this time around was those people doing what they'd have been doing anyway and Harambe happened to be the meme of the time. The Harambe part is incidental.

It feeds fake news by spreading it around and making people like anon go "wow, really?" instead of relegating it to the non-issue it totally is. I have no clue where you got that I was trying to blame you for "the media and modern journalism being crap" ???

Re: 2016 confessions & unpopular opinions

Okay, but just so you know, my initial comment didn't spread any fake news. I said "the people who threw away their vote on Harambe". I didn't claim there were thousands of people doing this.

Re: 2016 confessions & unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, since anon's reaction was like "I thought it was a joke" I pointed out that the rumors of people throwing their vote away on Harambe are unverified and as far anyone can tell, fake news, and yes, probably a joke or at least done by people as a joke.

People write in all kinds of stupid shit on the ballot

again there's 130 million votes in a presidential election. If .0001% write in something stupid, that's 13,000 right there.

I for one would rather have voted in a dead gorilla than ANY of those clowns in any of those parties.
