I think a major factor in Donald Trump's election was people who believe it is divinely ordained for men to rule over women. It's true that some of these people explicitly argue against Trump on the grounds that he doesn't "protect and cherish" women. However, I think a lot of them consider Trump a man who dominates women and does whatever he wants to them, and they consider a vote for Trump a vote for a world in which they can dominate (if male) or be dominated (if female.)

Actually, I'll go a step farther. A massive amount of American politics is built on the fear that people who aren't like you may have penises and use them to "steal" women you consider your property. Alex Jones has built a substantial amount of his career on this, but it goes beyond the fringe. It's a big part of anti-immigrant rhetoric, it's why pre-op transwomen get so much hate, and it's why there's always, always a backlash whenever a commercial shows a black man and a white woman who are married to each other.

One thing I know for a fact was a factor was that a lot of wannabe alpha males couldn't stand the thought of Bill Clinton as occupying the first lady office. I lost count of the amount of guys saying that they just didn't think it was right that he was there and the implication that it was some sort of affront to their own sexuality the First Lady Bill Clinton jokes. It was a dumb reason to vote Trump, but in an election powered my dumb reasons that one was there too. That there was no counter to that from the Hillary campaign team except mockery didn't help, a smart campaigner would have found a way to shore up those fragile egos and win them over, instead of letting their supporters ridicule them and let them either blow away in the wind or go directly to Trump.

It's the kind of thing Bill could have countered (don't know if he tried). The kinds of things he's been doing since leaving office aren't so radically different from what a first lady might do, anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit. I've seen statistics that abusive/violent men are more likely to get custody of their kids rather than less likely. Just because the idea of 'the alpha male' is so appealing to so many people. And what's more alpha than being violent towards your spouse and kids?

Really? I know a lot of people voted for him because they were voting against Hillary. As long as the democrats put forth a different candidate in four years, the democrats will take control of the White House again. Voters made it clear years ago they don't want Hillary for president, not because she's a woman but because she's Hillary. Her record speaks for itself and she is no less misogynistic than Trump. She's actually worse because she's the one who has launched attacks against rape victims and voted for policies that hurt marginalized groups. But her supporters don't like it when that's pointed out because many seem to need to make her out as something other than a vile piece of shit who has literally made a fortune through lying and stealing. She even stole a bunch of stuff from the White House when her husband left office!

Honestly one of the articles I saw and believed was that the biggest harm to Hillary's campaign was the Republicans didn't have to say anything true, they just had to keep pumping out ridiculous rumor after rumor and the Democrats looked at them and went "Jaysus H Christ, no one with half a brain would think Hillary did a tenth of that stuff." and ignored it until eventually they had to face that ohshit, people really were believing it and they were faced with an army of people going "Why should we vote for a candidate who voted for chemtrails!?"

And at that point you're scrambling trying to figure out how to say "chemtrails aren't even real and even if they were she wouldn't vote for them but they're not so she couldn't have." in a way that doesn't sound like you're an asshole, and the fake-news sites are bragging about how many clicks and shares "Hillary votes Chemtrails!" get for them.

Meanwhile the Bernie-Bros are shaking their heads at the poor stupid trumpers who'll believe anything while sharing a tweet that weedzrage69 started that you CAN write Bernie in and have it count and the major news outlets are just lying about it because they're tools of the establishment.
