I don't blame them, but is like a common trope of "The power of love can beat anything!", and we don't even know if the protagonist will end paired in the end of the movie, which all asume.

Still, reading comments of "let's boycot this movie to beat the evil straight white people for taking some lgbt+ story!" from Tumblr doesn't help them at all.

Except it's about a passionless ice skating coach suddenly regaining that passion because of someone they're going to be coaching. That is the direct plot of YoI and is not a common trope.

It's basically like saying, "This isn't Sailor Moon, but it involves magical ladies powered by the planets and the main heroine is a princess from another plant reincarnated."

It's a plot that's existed ever since sport movies started being made, YOI is only more unique because there's romance (and that's because in these movies the main relationship between the two leads is more familial, I'm positive YOI is not the first to go for romance instead) and because it's a romance between two men.

And as far as the name goes, "____ on ice" has also bee around forever. YOI didn't invent ice skating, bitter sport veterans finding happiness again and romance. It's just a coincidence.

I think the part that's not common is the part that's specifically a romance between the coach and the person they're coaching.

There's plenty of examples of bitter jaded sports veterans finding their happiness again, and plenty of examples of romantic sports movies, and plenty of romantic sports movies where bitter jaded veterans find their happiness again. but I can't think of any where their romantic interest is specifically someone they're coaching. I mean, I guess you could interpret Bull Durham that way, but it's definitely not canonical.

What's hard to figure out how much of what they're doing is because of them copying YOI, and how much of it is Lifetime doing what Lifetime does, in a sport where it's much easier to envision a het romance between coaches and players compared to something like baseball or basketball or whatever. It's certainly the case that all of those aspects on their own are part of sports movie DNA.

If the only known similarities were "falling in love" + "figure skating" I'd say sure, it's a coincidence. There were movies and books about that before YOI. But the summary and the title we have way more similarities than that.

For what it's worth I don't care that it's straight. Hallmark movies are made for straight women who like straight romance, nbd. I'm just cringing at how obvious the ripoff is. If they admit it was inspired by an anime I won't even care that the movie's being made.

Plus the movie was made AFTER YOI started airing; the actors weren't even cast until I think late October?

That's some pretty damning evidence.

I'm on team "yes it absolutely is a rip-off building on the hype of a good romantic plot but it's laughably terrible (THE TOWN THEY LIVE IN IS CALLED SKATEVILLE) and is going to impact YOI's bottom line ZERO" so. People can get outraged all they like, and I understand that, but I've got so many more things to focus on besides a terribad Hallmark movie.

Yeah I'd have to agree. They've basically gone, "Oh my god look, this thing was popular with BL fans, lets take out the gross gay and capitalize on this with normal people!"
