Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Merida did actually want to rule her kingdom and become queen, she just didn't want to change who she was in the process and get married to a stranger. (Which...isn't a bad thing...?)
And be honest, if you had to unexpectedly marry a man who you'd never met, on top of being a teenager, you'd probably wouldn't be in the best frame of mind to make decisions either.

Imo Merdia gets way too much hate and I find most of it pretty disturbing and misogynistic.
