Her existence made me retroactively hate Merida even more then I already did.

Not that I think Merida should have had to get married off to a stranger, but Moana >>>> Merida when it comes to actually giving a shit about their responsibilities, and their role as FUTURE RULER of their "kingdoms" holy fuck.

Merida can go jump off a cliff, Moana is a million times better.

Bonus: The movie also made me feel retroactively worse for Eleanor, with her enabler of a husband. He loved her "deep down", but good god, he could have backed her up more. Ugh.

I wouldn't say "hostile", goodness. She's obviously chafing at the restrictions but she does WANT to lead and be a good daughter.

Yes, "hostile".

That's why she sings that she can learn to be happy living in the island, finding her place the way her dad wants to. And she is shown as happy with her people, up to the moment when they start lacking food.

Different cultures, different ways of being shown what they're going into. I liked them both and realize that things were just different for them.

Chill OP.

Uhhh... missing the point much?

Moana: gets total power over her island and people, is inheriting the throne without being forced to marry, won't have to compromise anything of her own future except her goals to leave the island and sail around.

Merida: was being forced to marry a dude so that in effect, he could rule. Because tradition.

This has very little to do with accepting responsibility and more with wanting to maintain personal agency.

They're very different people from very different cultures dealing with problems that are only similar on a very surface level. Give Moana a dad hell-bent on marrying her off so her husband can rule the island and see how she handles it. I imagine Merida would have responded very differently to a father who was grooming her to rule by herself instead of the one she got.

way to needlessly compare two characters, op. whatever shall we do if we can't lift one female character without dragging another down?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Brave came out how long ago, again? I feel sad for you if you're still hung up on hating it. Just... let it go and enjoy your new movie.

"let it go"

;)

The Disney movies (especially princess ones) are not big on responsibility in general. I think the only heroine who was actually responsible is Mulan.
That's actually one of the reasons my parents didn't want us watching Disney growing up - they didn't like the messages.

I think it would be more accurate to say that Disney presents royalty, then has them all not want to live the life of royalty. They're fine with, say, Tiana wanting to run a business.

I don't ever remember Merida saying she didn't want to rule or have responsibilities, I thought her issues laid more with how her mother was trying to make her a person she didn't want to be all for the sake of tradition. Merida can be a queen and get married without having to sacrifice who she is but nobody around her recognized that.

Moana is just a way better written movie than Brave

Putting something down in order to raise up something else. Nice. Very original, particularly the jumping off a cliff bit. Perfect metaphor for what your secret did.

I really disliked Merida (drugging your mother to get your way, nice one!), but that's an unfair comparison - I think if Merida could've been ruler on her own without being married off, that would've solved 99% of the problems she had. Still side-eye her for trusting a stranger and taking that enchanted cake to alter her mother's mind, and the way Merida seemed more worried about getting in trouble than realizing what she did was wrong.

It's not a competition? There can be two characters with different motivation without one of them being bad.

Is this a troll secret?

I really liked Merida, especially when she was little. If I had a daughter, I'd want her to be like Merida.

I'm so tired of every Disney review I read sounding the same:

"X movie is shit and has always been shit. Y movie is the best thing ever. Fuck X movie."

Another win for rape culture!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Merida did actually want to rule her kingdom and become queen, she just didn't want to change who she was in the process and get married to a stranger. (Which...isn't a bad thing...?)
And be honest, if you had to unexpectedly marry a man who you'd never met, on top of being a teenager, you'd probably wouldn't be in the best frame of mind to make decisions either.

Imo Merdia gets way too much hate and I find most of it pretty disturbing and misogynistic.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I hate Merida, but I'm much prefer Moana as a character. What you said being one of the reasons.

...Welp, now I ship Moana/Merida just to spite you because I don't like character bashing.

CONSIDER THE CROSSOVER!
