It could be Dutch! I sometimes mix them up when looking at them in a style. I can do them no problem, but it can take me a bit to identify them. I don't think I've tried third-french before, it might be time to get a mannequin out!

Pins are a life saver, most definitely.

I do something similar style all the time. Two regular braids, wrapped around my head. And my life-saver pins are Spin Pins. They look like double corkscrews, and you twist them into your hair, and they stay put. As in, regular bobby pins fall out of my (thick) hair pretty easy, but I can put my hair up like Leia's with four of those and it'll stay all day without a problem.
I can't French braid to save my life, but I get something close to hers.

OP, If your hair's at your armpits you may want to start the braids closer to your ears - just keep playing with it.

I have to look into those spin pins!

Bobbi pins can be tricky if you don't put them in a certain way, I can't tell you how many I've dropped.

Seconding the spin pins! Two of those and my hair (bra-strap length and about average thickness) is up and secure for all day.

I got my friend, who has super-fine hair, the mini spin-pins, and she loved them (until the cat batted them under who-knows-what).
