I might have some tips for you depending on what kind of hair you have, OP. Leia's hair is SUPER thick so it might not be exact, but braiding actually looks a heck of a lot harder than it is, and with practice you can get a french braid into most lengths of hair, past a certain point. All Leia's hair is is a french braid that's been plaited around the hairline rather than down in a straight line. If you've got hair at all, you might be able to manage this.

I don't necessarily want to use this defense, because I hate when people demand to know who's an abuse survivor and who's not so they can determine who's allowed to write underage sex. It reminds me of when doctors try to make sure you actually need pain pills and aren't a "drug seeker." All it does is set up ever higher standards of "proof" that make things worse for people who need some way to cope.

To be fair, there's no other thing to specifically read into what happened with Umbridge. The book is very vague about what traumatized her so much, and there's no in-universe evidence to support any one interpretation of what they did. If you want to answer the question at all, out-of-universe is the only way to go.
