I might have some tips for you depending on what kind of hair you have, OP. Leia's hair is SUPER thick so it might not be exact, but braiding actually looks a heck of a lot harder than it is, and with practice you can get a french braid into most lengths of hair, past a certain point. All Leia's hair is is a french braid that's been plaited around the hairline rather than down in a straight line. If you've got hair at all, you might be able to manage this.

My hair is super thick too, but it grows really slowly. It is only at armpit length now after years of growing it out, and I don't think it is going to get much longer. So it is rather too short to braid except maybe something like little braids on the side, which I don't think would look good on me.

Oh my gosh no! My hair is shoulder length and I braid it all the time! You have PLENTY of hair to braid, especially into this style! I was thinking you had a pixie cut or something. Your hair should be the perfect length for this style.

Edit: The stylist in me wants to know what type of hair you have (curly? Straight?) and how often you trim it. Your hair should grow on average a half an inch a month, so I'm wondering if there's something I can suggest that might help.

It is wavy? Not exactly curly, but the ends do curl. And just really thick. Thick enough that it gets commended on every time I go to the hairdresser. I only seem to need to trim it every 6 months or so, though. It does not grow anywhere near that fast. Like, maybe a couple inches a year.

Okay. Make sure, when you trim it, that you're trimming ALL the split ends. Sometimes people insist on only taking of the very tips when the bottom few inches are all split, which will make your hair look shorter and seem to grow slower because of the breakage, plus it will continue to break up the hair strand. (Not saying you're one of those people, but I can't see you so I have to cover all my bases). 6 inches a year is average but some people may grow as few as 3 or as many as 9. My hair is shoulder length and I've been growing out a pixie for two years, so I understand the stress of WHY ISN'T IT GROWING. Also, once it's longer, it appears to grow slower because there's not a drastic difference like there is with short hair.

If your hair is down to your armpits, you have more than enough hair to do this style. I'm about 80% sure I can do this style on my own hair, and I just did it on a mannequin who's hair would have been your length or shorter, if mannequins had shoulders. Can you french braid?

It's cheating, but I've gotten my hair to look somewhat similar by following this sort-of-tutorial? It's not identical, but it might be easier for you? (I've seen it called "milkmaid" braids, but honestly I just googled "two braid hair with girl from Lizzie Bennett diaries.)

(nonnymouscawitz can definitely help you better with doing it properly - I'm just shit at french braiding, and wanted to throw this out there as an option.)

Obssessively following this thread! I absolutely suggest this tutorial if frenching your own hair is difficult for you, OP! Her hair probably isn't much longer than yours, and if you're doing a loose braid instead of one that requires you to pick up hair, it might be easier for you to get yourself started. I personally hate to try and pick up strands for my own hair, and when I'm braiding to curl over night I try loose like these.

And of course, you can experiment with different kinds of braids until you find what looks best to you.

Side note: Hair is all about cheating and deception! Trust me, stylists take short cuts all the time to help people find a style that's manageable.

It's a really handy tutorial; this is officially my new plane flight hairdo, since it's off my neck, but also not a bun that might prevent me from leaning into my seat.

That being said, OP, I forgot to say - I have thick hair, and I found this tutorial was a little easier to handle if I put my hair in low pigtails first, using REALLY CHEAP really shitty hair ties, like, the kind you put on your braces, practically. Then, using that hair tie as a pivot point, I would braid my hair "up"? I guess? Holding it up above my hair, and braiding it against gravity, so that the braid would look nice. Then I snapped the hair tie out, and threw it away. I also found it helped with day-old hair, but IDK how your hair is, or if that's something you're comfortable with?

It looks like reverse braids (Dutch braids), pinned, to me. It might be French, or third-french (adding hair for only one row, instead of all three rows). Though you can get the "milkmaid" braid crown look using normal braids if they are long enough and you are skilled enough with pins!

It could be Dutch! I sometimes mix them up when looking at them in a style. I can do them no problem, but it can take me a bit to identify them. I don't think I've tried third-french before, it might be time to get a mannequin out!

Pins are a life saver, most definitely.

I do something similar style all the time. Two regular braids, wrapped around my head. And my life-saver pins are Spin Pins. They look like double corkscrews, and you twist them into your hair, and they stay put. As in, regular bobby pins fall out of my (thick) hair pretty easy, but I can put my hair up like Leia's with four of those and it'll stay all day without a problem.
I can't French braid to save my life, but I get something close to hers.

OP, If your hair's at your armpits you may want to start the braids closer to your ears - just keep playing with it.

I have to look into those spin pins!

Bobbi pins can be tricky if you don't put them in a certain way, I can't tell you how many I've dropped.

Agreed, this is a great look, especially her hair.

This was always my favorite, too.

This was the Leia hair for me too, OP. I think it was more flattering and convenient as well :3

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's my favorite hairstyle for her too and I used to do my hair like that every now and them when I had long hair. My hair's very thin, so the style didn't look nearly as nice on me, but it felt nice to share hairstyles with a hero of mine.

I think I liked this hair-style best as well, all I know is that it's the one I remember her with the most, I think it looks great.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
That was my favorite hairstyle and my favorite outfit of hers.

My fave as well.

I loved Leia's Cloud City hanging braids. But I think my favorite was the high pile during the Coronation at the end of ANH. She is just stunning in that scene.

This true for me as well, especially since the Star Wars movie I saw the most of growing up was RotJ, plus I had not one but TWO Endor action figures of her (one of them is still around somewhere, wearing a somewhat dirty calico jacket I made once). That's the hair she has on Endor, up until the Ewok village.

Actually the hair she has in the Ewok village is gorgeous too.

Erm, you all know those were hairpieces, right? Carrie's hair was never long enough to execute those styles. She has a section in The Princess Diarist about the hairstylist with whom she worked, it's pretty funny.

So just go to your local Sally's & get some braid hairpieces, pin & go.

I think I saw something similar upthread, but a version of this hairstyle is very, very easy to do!

1. Put your hair into two pigtail braids.

2. Drag one braid over the top of your head and use bobby pins or screw pins to secure it to your head.

3. Do the same with the second braid, overlapping it with the first.

For something extra fancy, skip the pins and instead thread a large yarn needle with ribbon, using it to 'sew' the braids to the hair on your head.

I love this style, and you can do it with hair any length past your shoulders really. Also, it's a good way to keep hair out of the way while caming. ^_^
