You'll be very disappointed to know the whole thing lasted about a day, and the fandom has apologized, moved on and forgotten since Kubo Mitsurou tweeted that she was ok with the movie, and the Hallmark channel responded to someone's civil e-mail to say that the movie is based on a book published in 2015. So it all worked out and we're back to being happy as can be with our shit fujoshiness ;)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't sound right. I've read about the issue a lot on Fandomsecrets, and from what I've gathered, it seems clear to me that fujoshi are evil insane idiots who must be even now plotting a siege on the headquarters of the Hallmark corporation. I'm definitely certain that no one could ever be reasonable, based again on the conversations I've had here on Fandomsecrets. People have been very confident about this.

Yeah it's coming out way too soon to have been copying YOI. Also have to echo the OP's statement that the target demographic is way too different, I don't think Hallmark has suddenly decided to start making movies aimed at LGBT YA (though I think it'd be cool if they did).

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think before realizing it was based on a book, there were legit concerns because it didn't start filming until after YOI started airing.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And because the book summary is nothing like the shorter movie summary on IMDB, which is what the YOI fandom saw first and makes it sound more like YOI than the later one.

How is the fandom handling the whole "Kubo probably engaged in plagiarism herself" thing? (The fact that they changed one of the images without a word denying or confirming the accusations is pretty shady too.) The schadenfreude doesn't stop!

If you can't navigate the Japanese site, here's the highlights:

People also did transparent comparisons and the photos line up PERFECTLY on a lot of them. At least one photo has been confirmed to be a copyrighted image that you cannot pay a licensing fee for, it's from a design website. There's more where that came from too.

I haven't seen much about this in the English speaking fandom, and the little that I have is people defending her in the most cringeworthy way, basically the same idiots who wanked about "Love On Ice" are claiming "it doesn't matter, gawd you're all such LOSERS for caring about this" because now the shoe is on the other foot.

The show is an alright show, nothing groundbreaking like the fandom is constantly circlejerking about in my opinion, but pretty cute, if I ignore the whole "probably engaged in plagiarism" thing. The fandom though? Burning garbage pile.

My Japanese is very rusty so correct me on this: The problem is for use these images in general or use these images without buying the commercial license for commercial purposes? Because is common that artists use stock images for their pics, but some of the stock images have a "do not use for commercial purposes without permission" thing.

OP

Right, you've got the gist of it. The problem is that it seems as if Kubo was just wantonly using images for inspiration and/or direct tracing whether or not they were stock photos. There's this photo too, which is most definitely not a stock photo:

http://www65.atwiki.jp/torepaku/pages/24.html

It seems to me as if it's more coincidence than not that there were a bunch of stock photos, mainly because stock websites are obviously a great place to get a bunch of themed images, and less because Kubo was willing to pay all the stock licensing fees. The photo above, the design of Viktor's room (that was changed without a word for the DVD release), and a few other photos like the keychain pic were not available for licensing and yet they were used anyway.

I know all about using stock photos for reference, that's what they're there for after all once you pay the fee, but that's not really the issue. I do think even if she bought the licensing fees that it's lazy as fuck to directly trace the images, which is obvious when you see the overlay comparisons, but that's a separate issue that would be a concern I would have only if she paid the licensing fees, which it seems she did not, considering she's perfectly okay with yanking designs and outright tracing from other photos that aren't able to be licensed.

I've gotta say, a lot of this seems to be... making too big a deal out of them?

I mean, take the skating glamour portrait you linked below, that looks like a deliberate reference to me. I mean, the skater in the original photo doesn't seem terribly put-out by it: https://twitter.com/brezinamichal/status/801560800250896384

And like... I cannot navigate that site at ALL but clicking around randomly found me a page where they appear to be picking on... the fact that the skaters' uniforms are drawn based on a reference of actual uniforms of skaters from the countries the skaters in the anime represent? Which I'm not sure why it's a big issue?

In general a lot of this seems to be just referencing, not plagiarism. Direct nods to actual ice skaters, pose reference for drawing, environment references...

Definitely felt more like a tribute/shout out to the original pictures/skaters than plagiarism.
