The only kind of attraction that actually exists is physical. Everything else is a narrative that we build for ourselves on top of physical attraction. People who claim otherwise are lying to themselves.

Also, the vast majority of people are basically attracted to the same things that social consensus has established as attractive, and people who say otherwise are probably mostly lying to themselves

You seem to think a lot of people are lying to themselves.

Yeah, I do. I don't think it's a good thing but it seems true. I expect I'm probably lying to myself as well.

Maybe they're lying to themselves. :o

Oh, I wish I were attracted to the things social consensus has established. Then I wouldn't feel like I have a bunch of weird kinks I need to be ashamed of.

are you an incognito MRA or something?

this sort of comeback is tiring as it is lazy

making some lame-ass association with some undesirable fringe group that doesn't frequent this corner of the internet so you can claim moral superiority while pretending you've made some witty comeback

just say they're a fucking idiot and add your two cents why they're a fucking idiot

(and don't claim I'm OP because it's just as lame)

I think this is a sad thing to believe. :(

I think it's usually at least built on physical attraction, but I also think certain actions or behaviors can make someone hot who you might not otherwise have noticed.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've told a lot of people that I don't get why [insert famous actor] is considered hot, he looks totally ordinary to me, etc., and been told that I'd have to see him moving around, interacting with people, etc. to get it. That just the picture doesn't show why the person is considered hot.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
On the flip side, a physically hot person's behaviors can turn people away.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
You've never met a person who went from looking plain to being beautiful the more you talked to them? Or a person who was a perfect ten on the hotness scale and started looking ugly when they opened their mouth to say horrible things?

DA

I've definitely seen enough of the latter to not put any expectations on physical appearances any more, for sure.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The second one, definitely. But the first one? No, I can't say I have. If I don't find someone attractive right off the bat, nothing they say or do is going to change that. I dated a couple of guys who were nice and funny and otherwise great people in the hopes that I would develop a physical attraction to them, but it just never happened.

This just in: old married people that completely lost their looks don't actually love each other, they're just playing the looooong game

Do you mean that attraction can't exist without physical attraction or do you literally mean that other kinds of attraction don't exist? Because I thought it was pretty common for people to draw a line between people they think are hot but wouldn't want to date and people they are actually interested in having a relationship with. I view the second one as including another kind of attraction than simply the physical one.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually really interesting to me because it's the exact opposite of my personal experience, but it is what people have tried to tell me my whole life.

Clarification pls?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
By physical attraction, do you meant that we are attracted to others only by their physical appearance, or do you meant a physical reaction within us is the only response?

How do you explain my crushes on writers I don't have pictures of?

so do you think people who don't look good should just kill themselves or what?

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is the Internet age. People develop (sometimes crazy intense) feelings for each other sight unseen all the time.

That's weird. I had zero attraction to a specific guy who was objectively considered incredibly handsome. I'd pass him over for other guys because there was just no interest. It wasn't until he opened his mouth and spoke his mind that I pretty much wanted to sit on his face.

I generally don't fine ~~handsome (read: conventionally attractive) men very attractive. They look kinda boring imo.

And yeah, what a guy says and does informs his attractiveness A LOT, to the point where some guys who I thought were meh before start to look really good to me over time if I get to know them and like them.
