The people complaining about them "stereotyping Polynesian men" need to seriously sit down and shut up. Nothing is ever good enough for them. Make a single POC Character, you get "WAH, you think all of us are like that!" Try to dodge that by having no POC Characters, it's "WAH, ERASURE!" And you never, never hear them say "this character should have been played/portrayed like THIS". No, it's always them fussing about how nothing you bring them is good. Nothing will ever satisfy them and they're doing more damage to their cause than the meanest, most closed-minded bigot they claim to be fighting against.

I find it odd that the only alternative you name to having a single POC character is having none. The other options of adding more seems simple enough to me.

I also think that it's often different people complaining about different things. You're acting like the same person is rejecting everything instead of Person A having a problem with x but liking y and Person B having the opposite opinion. The disliking of both is what other people pay attention to and then they decide that it's coming from the same person all the time.

I do sometimes feel like there's more negativity and "don't do this" than "do this instead" though. Personally I try to spend more time focusing on examples of things I think did something good than things I think got it wrong.

Right? It's disturbing that people complain about how horrible sjws are and that's why nobody should ever bother with casting POCS or trying harder.

Adding more POC would be fine, except that's just more "you're not representing us right" fuel. Especially if you give them character flaws.

I don't think it would fuel the fire because at the moment part of the problem is that even when people have good intentions, as in this case, every single expectation from the group represented is focused on that one character. Which it can't reasonably be expected to live up to. If there was more diversity there wouldn't be pressure for the token minority to be perfect.

But people who single out the vocal minority who complain and pretend like there are no choices except

1) one POC
2) no POCs

do the most damage of all. In many ways, they're worse because their entire argument is geared not towards a smart solution, but in shutting down the discussion altogether. Those darn SJWs, amirite? They're just not grateful enough to have the single POC character we've so generously bestowed upon them, so fuck diversity!

Are you serious? How is it shutting down the conversation to say "then in what way do you want the character portrayed so as not to offend you"? How is wanting them to say what will make them happy not working towards a smart solution? People like you, people who just get sarcastic and hostile when asked "how do we change", you're the ones fueling the "us vs them" mentality. I think you know that, which is why you went anon; so you could get your nasty little digs in without having to deal with someone calling you out for it.
