I don't think it's the attention, but I wonder how many of them are really just uncomfortable with the entire mythos surrounding femininity. I definintely spent several years aggressively wearing jeans and hoodies and trainers and hating everything related to female grooming, and my mother didn't help things by insisting I shave my legs and wear skirts at family parties and do something cute with my hair.

I definitely had an intensely anti-feminine tomboy phase. My parents didn't care though...

I present as female and feminine and I like it, now, but I absolutely 100% think you are onto something with your "uncomfortable with the entire mythos surrounding femininity" statement. I still feel that way sometimes.
