As soon as someone has the description "transmasculine, he/him or they/them pronouns" in their About Me section, I will not take them seriously anymore. They are almost always cis girls thirsty for attention. And it's amazing how similar most of them look, as well.

I don't take anyone seriously who "lists their pronouns" and I can't take the question "what are your pronouns" seriously. I'm gay, but LGBT circles can be so cringey now.

plus like why "pronouns". if you really want people to know your gender, just put that. why not just put "dude" instead of "he/him". why do I need to know two grammatical functions of the pronouns you prefer. why not three. why not zero.

The idea is that while all dudes go by he/him, not everyone who goes by he/him is a dude. It's really so people who don't identify in the gender binary can just give you their pronouns without having to make an explicit statement about their gender or lack thereof. Some people don't want their gender known, but are giving people who want to talk about them the courtesy of telling them how to do it.

wtf. Why would you go by male pronouns if you don't identify as male? Sorry, that's where I draw the line into "stupid as fuck" territory. gender identity "outside the binary" is dumb because we should just be eliminating the importance of the binary, not making up new identities that ultimately perpetuate male/female stereotypes.

I mean I like the "listing your pronouns" thing because it's less awkward than asking or not being sure.

Same.

I'd rather use the pronouns someone prefers. It's no big deal for me, and it is a big deal for them.

So if someone transitions they have to delete their blog and make a new one? Or accept everyone calling them the wrong pronouns? I'm thinking you've never known someone who was transitioning. Getting the word out in as many ways as possible is part of the process, plus at least some feel strongly about now using the right pronouns as it's been denied to them their entire lives.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what it is in the vast majority of the cases I'm talking about. The ones with he/him & they/them in their description are always afab and from what I've seen, not intending on transitioning in any way other than cutting their hair a little shorter.
And from what I've seen of most genuine trans people I've encountered, the goal is to pass as the gender they perceive themselves to be, not some special ~in between~ state.

I don't think it's the attention, but I wonder how many of them are really just uncomfortable with the entire mythos surrounding femininity. I definintely spent several years aggressively wearing jeans and hoodies and trainers and hating everything related to female grooming, and my mother didn't help things by insisting I shave my legs and wear skirts at family parties and do something cute with my hair.

I definitely had an intensely anti-feminine tomboy phase. My parents didn't care though...

I present as female and feminine and I like it, now, but I absolutely 100% think you are onto something with your "uncomfortable with the entire mythos surrounding femininity" statement. I still feel that way sometimes.

I can't take anyone seriously if their about me has a list of LGBT labels, illnesses they have, disabilities, pronouns, triggers, whatever shit of any kind.

I always feel like... you want to talk about your experiences as a whatever person, great. I talk about PTSD sometimes on my tumblr. But all the 'about me' thing is, it's just making a list of all the ways you feel oppressed or different or special, so that you can broadcast that to anyone reading. It doesn't say anything useful outside of being a tool you can wield in oppression olympics. It's "everyone else is sheeple" or "I'm not like those other girls". It's first world problems and white girl tears.

If you ~*~need~*~ to list more than your name, gender, and maybe age or location, you're a fucking tool.

maybe this is my unpopular opinion but it's weird to me to see someone who IDs as male specifically targeting "white girls" in their criticisms

I was using "white girl tears" as in the actual slang term, sorry if I wasn't clear.

There are such things as screen-names, false or vague locations, and possibly false ages too. How much people use them is probably a question of how smart they are about internet shit.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I feel bad about this but same, I'll always try to respect people's gender/pronoun choices even if I'm silently judging them in my head but... seriously, I am silently judging them in my head. I feel like a lot of it is just internalized misogyny. I mean, when there are people listing their pronouns as "anything but she/her".....

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Like sure, considering I'm rarely talking about them in third person, avoiding pronouns altogether isn't to hard and if I have to adress it, I won't intentionally use one they don't want. But in my head, as soon as I read "he/him, they/them pronouns" I go "okay, chick, got it".

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more likely to assume they're trans men who aren't fully comfortable/out as men yet. I had a trans man friend who accepted "they/them" as a transitional for into getting everyone to use "he/him".

sa" "for" or "into" - got a little confused in my typing there

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
There are doubtlessly a few of those as well, but at least on tumblr, I think that's the minority.

Re: Unpopular / Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, for most of my trans friends, online was the first place they could be open about their gender identity and have people use their preferred pronouns, so they jumped at that chance.

This is so true though. Transtrender is definitely a thing on Tumblr.
