I get squicked by ships where one adult person has known the other since childhood. It's different if they're the same age (like high school AU's or childhood friends), but if one is 27 and has known the 16 year old since they were 7, it grosses me out. How can you think of them sexually? You knew them when they were very little!

But ship and let ship. It's what the back button is for.

I hate this too, but at least in fandom it's acknowledged as a kink, while in mainstream media it's just "aw, that's cute" (as long as the younger character is female).

Ugh, yeah. You're right about that :\

Mainstream media really needs to adopt trigger warnings, too.

Dude, just because it gives you the creeps doesn't mean it's inherently creepy.

Jesus, what's wrong with this place lately and this judgy attitude?

I don't mind this if, and only if, the older character only knew the younger one for a brief period of time when the younger one was a child.

Like, a few weeks over one summer, they went to the same pool and got to be friends with each other and then one of them moved away/had to go home/was only there for family reasons in the first place, that sort of thing...

And I'm a sucker for 'met ONCE a million years ago and didn't realize for ages after meeting again' but I don't like 'large age gap that they grew up around each other with'.

XD; I'm so picky.

Hmm, yeah - I think I agree, and a "brief" meeting while one of them was young would be okay. It's just when they spend years together that I get squicked. I love reunion fics, where people knew/met a long time ago and meet again later on. Especially if person A recognizes person B, but not vice versa.

Don't think of it as being picky - think of it as knowing what you like ;)
