tbf though that is a really different thing from censoring violence and is done for very different reasons. (For the record sometimes I'm in favor of censoring clothing and other times not; depends on the reasons it's being done, the audience the game is being marketed to, and the game itself)

I don't actually think it's so different. At the end of the day, society has decided that a certain thing is taboo or inappropriate or negative, or can have a negative influence on the people experiencing it, or is exploitative. As a result of that decision, society - or its gatekeepers, or its representatives - have chosen to not allow the content to be experienced.

So it can be seen as different, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. I also think people tend to assume that the reason for censoring violence is always "think of the children" or because people assume that monkey see monkey do, or some other reductive reason.
I think there's a place for violence. But I also think it's worth thinking about what that place is, and why.

The reasons for doing it are different, though. Children can't see violence because it will make them super violent! People don't really argue that seeing skin will make kids want to dress like that though. Mostly just that it will make them think sexual things and that would be bad, or the more vague "that's inappropriate".

Do you think it's a good thing for society to have gatekeepers on artistic content?

I think it's good to have a "no" list. A limited one, perhaps, and one that is open to changing - it should serve society, not dictate it.
But just like we have hate speech laws limiting free speech, I think there is nothing wrong with certain other limitations.
Just because somebody makes something and calls it 'art' doesn't give it inherent intrinsic value or any lasting meaning.

I really would not equate censorship in art to hate speech laws. Yikes. Like at all. They are apples and oranges.

Does it matter if art has any intrinsic value? Who are we to decide that someone can't enjoy something the way they want because we don't think it has value?
