Really? One of the reasons I could never stand Yar was because of how quick she was to throw punches even when it clearly was not the best action for the moment. Yar was a shitty security chief.

She was a screw up who got her job because Picard liked her. Not sexually, I don't think, but he saw some spark of himself in her. She wasn't ready for her position, although of the Enterprise senior staff only Bev and WOrf did. Bev because Picard did like her in that way, and Worf because he was a deputy at first and not a department head. I guess Starfleet had a personnel shortage or that Picard was building his own little cult (Wesley joke goes here).

You can like one aspect of something without liking all of it. It's okay to like that Yar got to kick ass, particularly while acknowledging the problems in the rest of the episode, OP. (Besides, it IS fun to watch Yar kick ass)
