How to get your creative flow back?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Secret #5 made me wonder, how would you go about getting your creativity to catch fire again? I feel like I haven't written anything outside of work in ages, and that makes me sad. I also stopped creating crafts or even trying new crafts or artwork. :(

So, suggestions but also just curious what has worked for you if you've dealt with this situation?

The only thing that works for me is butt in chair, hands on keyboard. I will grind words out a hundred at a time if I have to. And at the end of the day, I can't tell the difference in quality of the words I ground out vs the ones that flowed like a waterfall.

And even if the ones I ground out were objectively more terrible than the ones that flowed, at least then I could edit them into something not terrible. You can't edit a blank page.

"You can't edit a blank page." I need that cross stitched and hanging prominently in my apartment.

Yup, this is it exactly.

Sometimes, you do it by just making yourself do it. I think the idea that creativity is all about inspiration does a lot of people a great disservice. Sustained creativity is work, and it can be really, really hard, but you have to push yourself to keep doing it.

I don't remember who, but there's some famous author who said that the best time to take a break from writing is not when it gets hard, but when it gets easy.

This is how I've been working. I've been pumping out a certain word count per day. It's exhausting and my writing feels like crap to me, but I can at least edit the crap to make it less like crap.

But waiting for creativity has never done anything for me.

Butt in chair, music playing, whether on Youtube or a music player. It's worked for sketching and writing.

Sometimes writing longhand is smoother for me. If I can write a good chunk, then type it up (sometimes adding bits as I go), the stuff that comes after the longhand section often comes to me.

Alcohol. Not healthy, but it can get me started then once I have something on the page I can go from there.

I've never tried it, but you could try one of those prompt communities or lists? Where you get an art or writing prompt a day or week. Some outside source to push you into getting going might help.

I just do whatever it is I do, like write or draw. Even if it sucks at first.

Waiting for the spark is like looking at two stones and wondering why there isn't a burning flame.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-01-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Upon more consideration, I'm thinking my problem is probably depression and anxiety related. I've been in a pretty dark depression for the last...while, and I'm thinking back and realizing my creative outlets stopped about the same time. Which is odd, because creative outlets is how I used to deal with depression; my creative creations would increase during those phases.

I've got an appointment with someone to talk about the depression already, so hopefully that'll eventually help with the creativity and motivation too.

For craft stuff I like watching tutorials on youtube. Lately sculpting and watercolour painting. I like looking at other people's finished projects on pinterest as well.

I'm only creative when I'm not at school. Because school = stress = depression = bye, bye creativity.

So, I guess destress if you can. Don't force it.
