I actually have a story for this one. As an adult, I really don't find him all that scary at all. But that's only very recently. Everyone has their childhood trauma, and Chucky is mine.

Imagine you are a six year old in the nineties, and your family has a LOT of VHS tapes of things they recorded from TV. You are alone in the living room. What is your first thought, Kindergarten aged child, when you find a VHS labeled 'Chucky?' .... Rugrats!

...It was not Rugrats. When my mom came in I was at the very end of the movie because apparently I was too afraid to approach the tv to turn it off. I had nightmares. I wouldn't watch anything with puppets or dolls, even sesame street. When I was 13 my sister would dutifully inform me if Spencers had their lifesized Chucky dolls out so I could avoid them.

And now am an adult and I look at those movies and go "okay but why? That is not scary."

Ohhhhhhhh, no! I feel so bad for kid you! I would've made the same assumption.

Yeah, we literally had an entire bookcase of VHS tapes, and several of them were kids movies recorded specifically for me. I did not yet have a concept of 'adult' movies.

AYRT

My family did the same thing. I had tapes of favorite TV shows, specials, movies...

Think most of them have been lost to time, sadly, since we moved so much and whatnot. Shame, it'd be so fun to go back and see just what all was on them.

We don't have any of that anymore but my parents still have trouble deleting things from the DVR. And somewhere I still have one or two of the dozens of old tapes.

Being an 80s/90s child, I remember the VHS collection well.

We had SO MANY. Not all of them properly labeled. We even had a separate machine to rewind them.

Oh god, I did something like that. Remember that 90s movie Encino Man with Brendan Fraser? Well I remember liking that as a kid, and one day when I was home alone I was going through the VHS tapes and and came across one labelled "Encino Woman" and thought "oh cool! one with a girl!" So I popped it in and lo and behold it was PORN! My first ever experience with porn. I was SHOCKED. I honestly don't even remember where I found the tape. It couldn't have been just out with the regular ones, but ugh. Such disappointment and horror my young self had.

I miss Brendan Fraser, why is he not a thing anymore?

That would be really unsettling though! Especially if you didn't really have a grasp on what was happening.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
He got too fat.

I attempted to verify this with google but most of the results are really bad photoshops.

Re: Brendan Fraser lots and lots of things. This article covers it perfectly: https://www.nickiswift.com/11384/hollywood-wont-cast-brendan-fraser-anymore/

It won't load for me but I will read that later! Although I kind of hate how prevalent these articles have become, half of them aren't very good.

They always seem to come down to the same basic thing - actor has several really bad flops and fades into obscurity, perhaps retreating to stage or voice acting instead.

Yep, it's just a big copy paste article. And sometimes the people aren't even actually gone yet.

Yeah, I've seen a few videos on Youtube of "Why Hollywood Won't Cast [Actor] Anymore", and there are some like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddy Prinz Jr who have shifted in VA work (FPJ is doing well in it, as far as I can tell). Some of them are still around, they just haven't been doing huge blockbuster work.

I wouldn't even consider either of them to be out of work. And really it just boils down to them not being the fresh new thing which we all knew without an article.

I was the same, but I watched it on TV one evening when it was on :( Was afraid of dolls for a LONG time. I had this really nice, blond-haired doll that was almost as big as me, but after that movie I was so scared I gave it away to a friend lmao :|

Oh yes I had nightmares about dolls. Funnily enough I could handle my own, just not dolls on TV.
