If the drug in question is pot, then I'm of two minds on the matter. On the one hand, I can understand why a lot of people feel like it's perfectly realistic to have a character smoke a joint without it being a big deal in the least. Because for many people, it really isn't a big deal in the least. I mean, probably at least three quarters of the people I know, beyond the point of being acquaintances, smoke pot at least semi-regularly. Personally, I hate how it makes me feel, so I don't partake, but I'm very used to there being pot around.

But on the other hand, I do feel like casual marijuana use is a lot more in character for some characters than for others. For example, despite BBC Sherlock's use of drugs, I can't imagine him recreationally using pot. It just seems like the polar opposite of the kind of high he's be into. OTOH, a character like Tony Stark (especially around the time of the first couple of Iron Man movies) would totally have a casual toke or two under the right circumstances.

Dean and Sam? I can totally see them smoking it sometimes - at least in the first couple of seasons. Though I tend to see them turning to alcohol a lot more, because it deadens pain - where pot is more of a relaxant, and as things get darker and darker for them I don't see them as feeling like they can let themselves relax.

Mulder and Scully? Probably not, because of the possibility they could lose their jobs. But if they were going to, I think Mulder would be more likely to have a toke than Scully would be. But I could actually see mid-series Scully at some zany party thrown by TLG or something, being offered a joint, and nobody thinks for a second she'll want a toke, but she just takes a nice deep hit, cool as you please, and passes it on like it's nothing.
