Are all terrible.

But what do you think will be the first good one. Can be one in production or just one you think would be good.

I mean, a lot of them could be good if done right, like any movie premise

idk though, it's a tough one for me to answer specifically because most of the video games I like either 1. have a million different ways the plot could go or 2. have barely any character interaction

maybe a really cleverly-approached Legend of Zelda movie? It'd have to be a bit differently structured than the games, of course, and have some (good) character development and subplots added.

Wreck It Ralph is a video game movie as far as I'm concerned, and it was awesome. Maybe that's the key. Adopting the aesthetics and mechanics... NOT the stories.

Yeah! I can't wait for the sequel!

I think video game movies tend to suck, because storytelling in video games is a completely different medium than storytelling in movies. It's hard to adapt, some things work in games that don't work on the big screen. Plus, the plots are usually longer and harder to condense faithfully into 120 minutes or whatever.

Actual video games characters appear in it. It just happens to focus on an entirely original story. And that's exactly what needs to happen for a movie to be good: it needs a story that works with the storytelling format of a film. Existing game stories are structured to accommodate 50 hours of gameplay in between major events, so they will never really work on screen.

Right, and that's why it's not a video game movie. It's a movie about video games.

Change what video game movies could mean, then. Stop doing the same thing and expecting the next one will be good.

I'm pretty sure that most people think of "video game movies" as adaptations of video games. Otherwise, it's just a movie about video games, just like a movie about a book is not the same as a movie adapted from a book.

Gotta agree. Wreck-it Ralph is a movie about video games, not exactly a video game movie. Like you say, there's a LOT of adaption that needs to be done to make it work in film, and I think that part of the reason so many fall flat is that they sort of... are misled by the fact that games have visuals/story/dialogue/animation too, and don't change things around enough to make it work.

Then again, plenty of book adaptations aren't great either.

The Phoenix Wright movie was a work of art imo but maybe that doesn't count

It was bloody glorious and I think it counts even if it's a visual novel.

Live action directed by Takashi Miike, of all people. I think it's hilariously bad.

I have high hopes for Sony's Sonic movie.

Sengoku Basara - the series and the movie - was a beautiful work of perfection.

But it's the exception that proves the rule, really.

I liked resident evil.

I'm right there with you on this one.

I really really really want the Chinese production of Dynasty Warriors (yes based off the Koei game, not Romance of the Three Kingdoms) to be amazing. Visually, at least. The story is not the least bit important to me in a DW movie.

I actually really liked Prince of Persia. *shrug*

I think people are too harsh on them. There's a few video game movies that I liked that people always say are bad. I like Prince of Persia, Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, hell I like the Super Mario Bros movie!

Assassin's Creed was drivel. Sorry. But it was drivel.

And again, I liked that drivel.
