Would you wear a burqa if it was socially acceptable to do so?

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-01-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Good lord above, I really would.

I can't imagine how comfortable I would be to have a complete barrier shielding my everything from the outside world, but I want that.

Just you made it a question.

So why not? If you don't mind my asking.

It looks restrictive and and I like being able to move around freely.

It's bad enough it's not usually socially acceptable to go barefoot.

I'm all about being barefoot indoors. Home, work, buses, shopping centers, but this world contains too much gravel to make it feasible outside.

No, but I'll admit, sometimes I wish I could wear a hijab. I'm not going to be an ass and do it as a non-Muslim, but yeah.

Yeah, no me either, that's what I mean "If it was socially acceptable".

But look at it this way: Who would ever know?

Re: Would you wear a burqa if it was socially acceptable to do so?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I would, for one. :P

But also, I'm in a Muslim-heavy city right now, due to college, and people would notice, especially if I only wore it some of the time - I don't want to wear one all the time, you know?

Head scarves really aren't Muslim-exclusive. They were fashionable with American women only a few decades ago.

But yeah, some scarf styles really scream Muslim. Literally though, it's more of a cultural thing that a Muslim thing. In the Middle East, even Christian women will wear headscarves.

While that may be the case, I'm thinking specifically of the hijabs that the Muslim girls around me are wearing that are obviously hijabs. They're so pretty!

I'll keep that in mind if I ever travel there, though. :D

I will admit to being a teeny weeny bit jealous of the women in hijabs on my college campus when I had to walk to class in the screaming cold. Silly emotion, but there it was. It covered up their ears and necks and looked very comfy.

Probably some days. Like the days I go into sex shops, or if I haven't showered in days. Or in the winter.

But like most days, it'd be waaay too warm for me to cover my face. I hate heat.

No, I think it'd make me feel claustrophobic.

Nope. I like jeans and tank tops.

I can relate to that feeling of wanting to hide. I'd rather wear something like a judge's robe, though, or those big cocoon coats women wore in the 1920s. Pic

Victorian Trading Company used to sell a black velvet opera cloak that looked a lot like this, but I just discovered that they don't carry it anymore.

Hell yes. I already cover as much as is 'socially acceptable' as often as I can without dying of heatstroke (fucking southern US summers goddamn). Long-sleeved shirts, pants, boots rather than sneakers bc what if someone sees my ankles?!, jackets with the collars popped, turtlenecks, I already have to wear gloves for work but I'm the only one I know who keeps them on even when I don't strictly need them, I wear a hat and sunglasses most of the time, too.

I don't like looking at myself, and I don't like other people looking at me. It's a bit of a problem.

I suspect it defeats at least half your purpose, because it sounds like it would make you very conspicuous.

Gods no. Bad enough when it's cold to have to wear the hood up on a hoodie or my ear-covering headband thing. I hate having shite on my head and i wear glasses - I'd trip and kill myself, the little eye-grill thing is ridiculous to see through.

Plus, also, fuck no, *too hot*, and all that material flapping around is a pain in my ass.

Re: Would you wear a burqa if it was socially acceptable to do so?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hell. No.

I love fashion, and I like being noticed for my fashion choices. I like bright colors, and color-blocking, and clean lines, and standout pieces. I like jewelry and bright lipstick. And I like things that fit just right. And while I suppose a burqa would be a fashion choice that would get noticed, I don't like how it looks aesthetically, and it's not like I'd be getting noticed because I was slaying the fashion game or anything. And frankly, if I'm going to be noticed for what I'm wearing, I want to be noticed because I'm killing it.

hell no. I hate wearing lots of clothes. that's not to say I don't wear them - I wear a lot of them in the winter because I get super fucking cold - but they are a HASSLE and I am more comfortable with less weight on my body. If I had my druthers it'd be warm enough everywhere all the time for me to go around in shorts and a tank top lol.

plus it looks like a pain in the ass to take off and put on.

Oh hell no.

Probably at least sometime, I just would want more face ventilation because I really can't stand the feel of my own breath on my face. Or anyone else's breath either *shudder* Even camping when it's way too cold I need my mouth/nose uncovered. But I like the completely covered thing, I've worn cosplay with masks and face coverings and as long as I can breathe freely I like being covered and hidden.
