Though honestly I feel that liberals / democrats are too nice to the wrong people and can be too mean to the right people.

Yeah. When they posit that "all white people are racist," and normal white people (you know, the ones not consumed with White Guilt) look at themselves and go "No, not really," they are (a) not doing themselves any favors, and (b) making the word "racist" so un-impactful that it's meaningless.

Same with all the other -ists and -isms they throw around like confetti.

Well, that, and the Democrat party ran literally the worst candidate possible.

You don't think everyone has internal biases they have to work against, race related or not?

You don't get the difference between "everyone has internal biases" and "all white people are racist"?

The one is something we can all probably agree on. The other throws out a loaded term in an effort to bludgeon one group of people into cowering silence.

A lot of 'liberal' whites are still pretty terrible.

How did they run "literally the worst candidate possible" when she won the popular vote? It's no fault of her own that Trump's campaign spread fake news like wildfire.

And continues to (such as 'I really won the popular vote, all of Hillary's were from illegals!').

She won the popular vote because of New York and California, who seem to buy in to her particular line of bullshit. Middle America (you know, those willfully ignorant racist sexist homophobic blah blah blah folks in flyover country) did not. And therefore she was positively crushed in the Electoral College, which is the vote that matters.

Maybe the problem was Middle America. When you have sexist, homophobic, religious zealots who aren't into the idea of treating other people humanely and don't believe in science or facts, maybe it's not the candidate that's the problem, but that the voters themselves are douchebags.

Or maybe (I realize this is a stretch) those people are sick and fucking tired of being called "douchebags" and other names by smugly self-important progressives and just tuned you out because it's gotten old. I mean, they're an "irredeemable basket of deplorables" anyway. No sense in trying to persuade them that your candidate is good for America, so just label them and walk away.

That was super effective. Do it again in 2020.

Of course I do. I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the Middle America who voted for Trump.

I don't understand this point of view that acts like states are homogeneous masses of ideology where everyone thinks alike. I can see how it made sense back when slave states were trying to protect their interests against free states, but right now it just doesn't match the reality I see.

Well, they're not, except as a sort of broad-brush thing. But Utah has a different culture than Texas, which has a different culture than California, which has a different culture than Mississippi, which has a different culture than New York.

Somehow, we make it work, but I'm really afraid that we're not going to be able to for much longer because the divide (at least from where I'm sitting) looks awfully deep and wide, and it's only getting more so. We're yelling at each other instead of talking to each other, at least in the public square. It makes me sad, honestly.
