I'm curious to see who they'll pick for the actor/actress categories.

I've seen a bunch of the movies this year and while I didn't always enjoy the movie, the acting has been pretty top notch.

I really hope Amy Adams for Arrival, for sure.

I think we can safely assume that Moonlight, La La Land, and Manchester are walking away with BP noms.

That leaves up to seven spots open. Maybe Lion, Silence is a good bet, I.......can't think of any others, and it still leaves some big spots.

The other buzzworthy movies that I'm curious to see how they'll fall are Fences and Jackie.

And La la land was good but I'm not sure it was 7 Golden Globes good. In your opinion, how do you think the movies were this year? A friend and I said that this year didn't have a lot of those indie darlings.

I couldn't even get through La La Land tbh. I was legit excited with the first trailer, but the second one sapped my enthusiasm and it never returned.

(I'm just going to go off the screeners i've seen leaked as hints to what might be nominated)

Arrival is good but the ending falls a wee bit flat. The more I think about the ending of Arrival - not even the conclusion, but the really terrible conversation Louise and the other guy have - the more peeved I get.

I haven't seen Fences, but people tell me "It's.....really a play on a screen, which might hurt it."

A24 and Moonlight - released it limited in October, it got good reception, slowly released it wider over November and December, got a lot of good buzz - it's the third highest rated movie EVER on Metacritic, which is far harder to succeed in than RT. It's near perfect. Having it in three distinct acts does do a disservice to the last act, but that only means it's about ten minutes shorter than the other two.

ON THE OTHER HAND.

Focus Features and A Monster Calls - "We're gonna release it in October 2016 - no wait we're going to put it in a qualifying run in LA County in December for awards and give it a wide release......within our lifetimes. No, we're going to put it out Jan. 16th - no fuck that, we're gonna put it out Jan. 6th. And we're not going to give it a third trailer or update our marketing materials because, by god, we have NO IDEA how to advertise this movie." It only could have done worse if Weinstein had it! It's near flawless, and in a year where a lot of Oscar Bait movies got ignored or had less of an impact than hoped, this really could have been a contender if Focus hadn't fucked with it so badly. I would adore this getting a BP nom, or any Oscar nom whatsoever because Focus did this movie really. dirty.

ON A METAPHORICAL THIRD HAND

Disney did the same thing but to a far less irritating degree with Queen of Katwe. If they paid hard enough it probably could get some acting or production noms.

I wish more Indie movies were acknowledged. I haven't seen Swiss Army Man, but I did see Hunt for the Wilderpeople and it really could have contended at the Globes in the comedy section. People are upset The Nice Guys wasn't acknowledged but I thought it wasn't that great anyway.

I saw La La Land in theaters and enjoyed it but felt it had a bunch of flaws and really didn't deserve to sweep the Globes.

I don't know about Oscar screeners, I've only seen the SAG screeners.

I agree with you about Arrival's ending but I think it's a movie that makes more sense on a rewatch.

Fences is VERY much a play on screen, but for Denzel, he does it justice and it's really well acted. Him and Viola Davis did a good job since there needed to be so much emotion in the roles.

I really didn't see that many other movies throughout the year, just the big blockbusters.

Absolutely nothing or the ending of the awards as whole. The Oscars are an absolute farce at this point.

At the very least, let's hope they don't fuck up the animation awards as bad as they did last year. (Oh but they will.)

The Animation voting is always in Disney's pocket these years.

I am still SO SO BITTER that Big Hero Six took an Oscar over Song of the Sea AND Kaguyahime.
That's it. The animation award is bullshit forever.

Well, I personally didn't like The Lego Movie, but it was better than BH6, so yeah :|

Re: Oscar Noms Announced Tomorrow!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh lord yes this. Also I remember seeing a lot of people online complaining about BH6 winning over HTTYD 2 and I was like 'did you people even *see* Kaguya-hime and Song of the Sea?' They were both amazing and it's ridiculous that BH6 won over either.

I get that a lot of people liked HTTYD2, and it's a good movie (AND ALSO BETTER THAN BH6), but to me, it's not nearly as interesting and innovative as Kaguya or SotS were. Both of those two had visually interesting and stunning animation, really imaginative sequences, great style, and SotS especially had some really strong messages and metaphors going.

Re: Oscar Noms Announced Tomorrow!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-23 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
SotS became an instant favorite for me the moment I saw it, I loved the art and the story and the soundtrack was one of those 'get home from theater buy soundtrack now' things. Kaguya I felt the story was a little thinner but the art more than made up for it. HTTYD 2, I liked it but I felt like there was a pretty vocal crowd on Tumblr in particular that were in the mood of 'anyone but Disney or it's rigged' and they had decided HTTYD 2 was the more deserving winner because that was the one other nominated movie they'd seen. Which bugged because if you're going to complain about the Academy blindly voting for Disney without seeing the other nominees maybe see the other nominees yourself before declaring which one got robbed.

Re: Oscar Noms Announced Tomorrow!

[personal profile] ketita 2017-01-23 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with you. I really think SotS should have taken it, but if not that, Kaguya was a close second because of really amazing art, which was clearly the bigger draw of the film. It's not meant to have a super complicated story, which is fine.
But HTTYD2 pales next to both of them on every level, imo. And it's kind of sad, because I would have liked for the recognition to have gone to that studio, to encourage them, and maybe break the stupid Disney monopoly on animation Oscars. But nooooo.
And yeah, people who only saw HTTYD2 making such a huge fuss is super hypocritical.

I'm so excited!!! I won't be able to play when it's first out but I plan to start the game as soon as I can.

I feel like I should spread the game out so I can really enjoy it but knowing me I'll probably sacrifice sleep to play it in a week.

It would be so awesome if they could have ~~UPDATE~~ segments that were, well, updated to current day. Maybe those mysteries have been solved by now!
