It's depressing watching everyone here leap to conclusions based on an obviously, deliberately provocative pull-quote. (A quick Google search didn't turn up the original interview - anyone got a link?)

Obviously, popping one's old feller into the hands of someone you've just met, or someone you have power over, is illegal and repellant, and what happened to the OP was gross and wrong. But how can you lot tell, from those few words, that that is what JB has actually done? We know from interviews that both the men and the women in the TW cast get up to this sort of thing on set. What if all he's describing is that sort of comfortable malarkey between actors?

A short illustrative anecdote. We hear many reports of Mr Barrowman "teabagging" his fellow actors. This produced a horrible image in my mind - until I saw behind-the-scenes footage, in which JB is about to splat an actual teabag onto someone's head.

ETA: found it (http://john-barrowman.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=101&pos=0). The pull-quote does not appear anywhere in the article; it may have been invented by the mag for the sake of a catchy headline. In the article John describes goofing around with his co-stars, not harassing peopl at random. Interestingly, he says he flirts with David Tennant but wouldn't touch him sexually, because "It's not that kind of a relationship", whereas he and Eve Myles mess about very rudely.

(I hope this is reassuring to the OP, who was right to be concerned, but maybe not quite sceptical enough about the press! :-)

Thank you for providing that. This is a lot better than defensive fans saying we shouldn't worry as long as it doesn't happen to us. It's still sounds a bit skeevy to me, but not quite as bad as the quote in the original secret makes it sound, especially considering I don't know the relationship of the cast.

Have to commend you for having the guts to speak out about John Barrowman. However even though I've been through all of the interviews, and have seen different perspectives, I still get the impression that Barrowman's antics are mainly about intimidation of female and probably male co-stars.

Even with the other perspectives, I'm still siding on the "not okay" side too. It doesn't sound quite as bad as the quote in the secret, but until there's something more solid proving that the other caster members really don't mind, I can't say "oh, those silly antics!"

Well, I've seen a good number of interviews with John Barrowman and his fellow TW co-stars. In one interview James Marsters commented on his behavior around the actress who played Tosh. If either of the actresses aren't comfortable with the way their co star is treating them, do you think they would be able to go up to John, or TPTB and complain without seriously putting their jobs at risk? Honestly, I think not! Neither one of them is as famous as John Barrowman, or has as much clout as he does.

That's true - as the leading man, he does have more power than either of them. However, Eve seems to actively delight in their mutual naughtiness; and Naoko has now left the show.

I think it's reasonable to worry that JB's shenanigans could humiliate, embarrass, or threaten a co-star, but we have no evidence that this has actually happened.

fwiw, here are some quotes from James Marsters which may be reassuring. (Could you dig up the interview you mention and link to it? My quick Google hasn't turned it up.)

[RT interviewer:] John Barrowman's a larger than life character on set, I believe…

[Marsters:] The first day on the set I was a little taken aback (I have issues. I had a weird childhood) [laughs]. And he noticed that I was a little uncomfortable with how forward everyone was with each other. The first day he saw me kinda going, "Oh my God". And the second day we do a big fight scene and he's a totally different person - 'cos he knows that I am weak, basically, and scared, and he totally changes. He's my acting partner and he wants to know what I'm comfortable with, what I'm not comfortable with, and how we can protect each other during the day.

He is a natural born leader and he sees everything on the set, he notices everybody's mood and he acts in a way that helps. I felt safe with him. I felt like I had a true acting partner, 'cos we both come from the stage and we understand what that means.

Good old John. We’ve known each other for, like, a hundred years. We worked together years ago in the London production of “Miss Saigon,” the musical. In 1731 A.D. or something. It was amazing to find out that, on the first day at the read-through, “Oh my God [it’s you]!” We’d not seen each other for awhile so that was incredible.

To be honest I can’t think of anyone else who could play Captain Jack.

As for the entire cast, we’re known to be a bit of a noisy bunch. But we really did, all of us get along so ridiculously well we’re like naughty schoolchildren. We’re always getting told we’re making too much noise. We really, genuinely get on so well—all of us.

Well, I did see one of the interviews with James, but James Marsters is an already well known special guest star, with more, or perhaps the same amount of clout as John Barrowman. And as for interviews.

Even though James Marsters went onto say that after he told Naioko how to react, John behavior was more professional, how do you know the same would not be true for an actress who is lower on the rung? Yes, we continually see the co stars saying they are comfortable with it and that they are friends. But what would happen if one of them said that they were not?

What would happen if an actress with some past issues were to get a small role on Torchwood, John acts the way he usually does, and the actress isn't comfortable? Could she go to producers, and complain, knowing how easily she can be replaced?

What kind of a president is this setting for other actors? As long as your friends, it is okay to fool around with co stars? If you are homosexual an out of the closet, that gives you carte blanche to sexually harass female co-stars?

I could be wrong, but listening to the interview, I don't think Marsters means that Naoko was actually worried by JB's shenanigans. Giving her "self defence lessons" was a way of conveying to Barrowman that he, Marsters, was nervous about the carrying-on on set, and it worked.

I think it's reasonable to worry that JB's shenanigans could adversely affect someone. However, we have no evidence that this has happened. What's more, if he's setting a bad example, so are the other Torchwood cast members - including the straight women!

Good point about the other cast members going along by allowing it an not saying anything. It would be nice if Eve Myles, Naoko Mori, or perhaps Freema, were to speak up and put their jobs and reputations at risk by complaining about his actions. Saying that they are NOT comfortable with him doing some of the things he does, and by NOT letting him get away with them! Yes there is a chance they could lose their job, but if there were some type of controversy about it, do you think the media and the public would side with John Barrowman, or the female who he made feel uncomforable?

Dude... Eve Myles plays with his balls. I don't think she's uncomfortable with his carrying-on in any way. I haven't seen any evidence that anyone is uncomfortable with it. That doesn't mean it could never happen, or that you're wrong to be concerned; but we have no reason to assume that it has happened.

Oh my god? Did you say she plays with his balls? Not doubting your story, but would be interested in knowing your source.

He lets women casually touch him like that, while in a committed relationship? What does his partner think? IMHO to me letting a woman pet ya is cheating...

And this really changes my opinion of Eve Myles if it is true, because if she is openly willing to do that to a gay guy in a committed relationship, why not do with with a straight guy? Wonder if anything interesting would happen if she were on another show. It also makes me wonder what kinds of lengths she would be willing to go to please producers. Is it her ability to act that scored her her role on Torchwood, or something else? What happens to women who aren't willing to do that with co stars?

Is it sad that what goes on behind the scenes of Torchwood, is more interesting than the actual show?

Frankly, I think your remarks about Eve Myles are prurient, prudish, and unfair. There's a huge difference between flirting with a gay friend, even this physically, and actual sex.

To me I think touching in certain parts is just crossing a certain line, and is beyond flirting, call me prudish, unfair, and old fashioned...

I just think that behaviour on the set of a TV show like could lead to some not so nice consequences...

We all have our own tastes and boundaries, but what I find prudish is the enormous leap from "She tickled his balls" to "That slut must be sleeping with the producer!"

Should not have made that leap, but I just think that allowing that type of behaviour to go on between lead actor, and lead actress and being not so quiet about it, could potentially lead to that type of behaviour at other levels.
