Re: What aren't you watching?

This Is Us.

I haven't come across a single other person that dislikes this show, and I keep seeing constant comments along the lines of "if this show doesn't move you, you have no heart" so it annoys me lol. I wanted to watch because of Sterling K. Brown, and I do think he's good in it, but...it's not enough to keep me watching.

I kept trying to get into it, but I've watched the first five (or maybe six, I can't remember for sure) episodes and I'm just not into it. It's like...it's ticking off all the boxes it's supposed to to be this "emotional" and "moving" show but to me it just comes off as too paint by the numbers to actually be invested in it. I don't particularly care about any of the characters, and although it's a type of show I usually like, it just doesn't do it for me. It all just feels really hollow to me, although apparently I'm the only one to feel this way. *shrugs*

Scream Queens I gave up on after the first episode (I thought it was just ok last year, but wanted to give this season a shot), American Housewife I thought was just dumb, Blackish I gave up last season because of some homophobic jokes that bothered me, Sleepy Hollow I gave up off after they killed (don't want to say who to not spoil it), and Frequency, Conviction, Pure Genius and Shooter I deleted off my DVR without watching because even though for some reason I recorded them, I could never get interested enough to actually watch them.

Star, Lethal Weapon, MacGyver, and probably some other new shows that I can't think of, I have all the episodes recorded but haven't watched any yet.

Of the ones on your list other than Frequency, I've watched a few episodes of Timeless but I'm kind of on the fence about it. Designated Survivor I thought of watching but haven't, Pitch never interested me to begin with because I'm not into baseball, and Emerald City I have recorded but haven't watched yet (although I might not now after this thread).

I watch waaaaay too much TV lol.

I haven't watched This is Us but the commercials come off as SUPER cheesy to me so I felt like just from the commercials it would be something I could not get into.

Maybe the problem is most people who wouldn't like it don't even bother watching it because of how it's advertised, so that makes you feel like you're alone when really it's just that not everyone has seen it.

I haven't seen any of the commercials other than the ones that aired before it started, but I definitely buy that people are like "I do not even care about weight drama and baby daddy drama and whatever the hell else is going on here." I know, because I was almost one of them! :D The only thing that made give it a shot was the lost baby story line and a general liking of Milo Ventimiglia and Justin Hartley.

It's not even about specific dramas it's just how they frame the commercials in a very manipulative way that makes it feel like, "You MUST care about this!" And like they expect me to cry about characters I'm not even familiar with.

You have to get me into a story before you can actively try to tug at my heart strings, trying to do it right off the bat just turns me off.

Yeah, manipulative is a good way to say it. After five or six episodes, I still didn't care about the characters, but there's all this stuff happening that's supposed to be moving or touching and it just didn't feel earned to me.

I'm definitely one of those people.

My mom and my sister are watching it, so I've heard it going on in the background, and it still doesn't seem all that interesting.

Yeah, it definitely is super cheesy. Usually I like family dramas character driven stuff and I'd heard such good things that I really expected to like it but it's just...not good, IMO. Like I said, it checks off all the boxes and does all the things it's "supposed to" to be touching and everything, but it just...really rings false to me. I couldn't get invested or care about any of the characters at all.

Anyway, you make a good point...there are probably a lot of people who wouldn't like it but just haven't watched it.

I like This Is Us, but I can definitely see how its not for everybody. Sterling K. Brown is certainly the shining star of it, though.

I don't like This Is Us either. I tried but I just can't care about any of it.
