Hotchniss or Hotch/Prentiss on Criminal Minds. I am a bit biased because I ship Hotch with someone else and this is a really popular ship, but I can see when Hotch and Prentiss have shippy moments with other characters, just not with each other. It has been a while since I watched the show originally and maybe I haven't gotten to the relevant seasons on my rewatch yet. CM is the kind of fandom where everyone gets shipped with everyone so in that sense I get it, but I don't understand why it's so popular (since I don't feel the chemistry, I guess?).

I was also surprised at its popularity. I mean, the chemistry of the cast is so fantastic that everyone has moments with everyone else so any shipping variation has something for it. I just never pinged on Hotch/Prentiss for myself (and I ship Hotch as a bicycle), and I was surprised when I saw that it was so big.

That one I can definitely see-they're both leader-y types, they're headstrong, Hotch gave her a chance when she first joined the team and then fought for her to stay with the team and whatnot other times, there's the way she looked out for him during everything with Foyet, stuff like that. I think the fact they're alike in a lot of ways is what appeals to those shippers. That and the fact they just plain look good together :p.

For me, Hotch/Reid is the one I'm surprised is so popular. I've come around to it a little more thanks to a particular fanfic author I'm a fan of, but outside of that, Hotch just comes off so much like a father figure to Reid for me that it's hard for me to really get on board with that ship in general. I just don't see the shippiness between them on the show.

Course, I tend to feel that way about Hotch's relationship with many of the younger members of the team, so...

That's interesting because I ship Hotch/Reid. And I suppose I sort of see where you're coming from. He's the leader and in those early days one of Reid's many teachers. But since Gideon was clearly meant to be Reid's father figure and Morgan kind of grew into the big brother role (calling him 'kid'), I never felt that kind of relationship between Reid and Hotch. Or Hotch and JJ or any of the other younger team members. As much as Hotch is defined by being a father, I've never seen him as a father to any of the team.

As for Hotch/Prentiss, I think them being so alike is why it sticks in my head so much. They are ridiculously similar, they even look alike! Usually people go the other route for their OTPs. And yeah, I remember the stuff you mention, but I guess I never felt the spark I need to understand a ship. And as much as I ship H/R, I've seen it in Hotch/Rossi, Hotch/JJ, JJ/Emily,...scenes. You are right that they look good together, but then so do Hotch & Reid ;)

I shipped this once upon a time, but I've pretty much stopped shipping Criminal Minds altogether. I'm not sure I even thought it through much when I did ship other than they were my two favorite characters and I liked the idea of them together (and also with Rossi).

I feel like they're hot in very similar ways, so maybe it's a thing where if you like one, you're going to like the other?
