Popular ships you just don't get.

[personal profile] illiadandoddity 2017-01-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure we've all been in at least one fandom where a really popular pairing isn't just one you don't ship, but one where you can't see why it appeals to anyone at all.

For me, Harry/Draco is one of those pairings. Like, I'm normally down for rivalshipping, but to me, that requires a certain baseline level of mutual respect, and Draco and Harry are just... constantly 100% jerks to each other. There's never any moments in the series where they seem like they understand each other or are on the same wavelength at all, so I just can't understand what people are seeing that makes them like it so damn much.

Which pairings do you not get?

Stiles/Derek, Stiles/Peter.

I understand that Stiles/Peter is the fucked up dark ship, but I don't *get* it.

Harry/Draco still makes more sense than all the Snape/Student (particularly Harry/Snape) fics out there. Those are just sick.

Hotchniss or Hotch/Prentiss on Criminal Minds. I am a bit biased because I ship Hotch with someone else and this is a really popular ship, but I can see when Hotch and Prentiss have shippy moments with other characters, just not with each other. It has been a while since I watched the show originally and maybe I haven't gotten to the relevant seasons on my rewatch yet. CM is the kind of fandom where everyone gets shipped with everyone so in that sense I get it, but I don't understand why it's so popular (since I don't feel the chemistry, I guess?).

Simon/Jace on Shadowhunters. Then again, that fandom is more determined that most to ship all the guys together (except Alec and Magnus).

I will forever be baffled at the sheer popularity Clint/Coulson had in the MCU fandom, they literally had no screentime together and yet it popped up as a background pair for years, and I still see it sometimes.

Like I can understand big rival-ships just fine even if they don't appeal to me, but a ship that has at max a 5 min conversation once being as big as it was? Utterly bewildering to me even to this day.

Kylo/Hux, mainly cause honestly I barely remember Hux being in the movie......

Also in Les Mis there is Jehan/Montparnasse and Bahorel/Feuilly. Bahorel/Feuilly especially just seems to Amis fans super blatant case of pairing the spares and I'm shocked it has actual fans.

There's no ship that I don't really get. But I am surprised how big Sauron/Morgoth is, especially as it really seemed to come up now. I've been in Tolkien fandom for decades now and I would've firmly put this as a rare-pair when LOTR came out. It's really blown up in the last few years, which I would not have expected at all (although it does seem to be falling into all the same tropes that a lot of other now-popular villain ships are using, which have little to do with characterization).

Re: Popular ships you just don't get.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with on rival shipping. I can't think of specific examples right now, but pretty much any of them. If the characters seem to genuinely hate each other in canon and have no positive feelings towards each other whatsoever it's pretty much impossible for me to ship it.

JD/Cox from Scrubs and, similarly, Jake/Holt from Brooklyn Nine Nine. That whole dynamic just creeps me out because it's so unequal. (And, to be fair, with Scrubs it's at least partially because JD/Turk was SO DAMN OBVIOUS that I found it baffling that anyone could ship anything else.)

Aria/Fitz from Pretty Little Liars. I guess it's for kind of similar reasons to the ones above, but at least with those it's with two adults. Adult + underage child + power imbalance is just a major squick to me. But there are a ton of people that find it ~so romantic~ and I literally just can't comprehend it at all. It's the same thing with Twilight, where a bunch of people think it's this epic romance and I think it's creepy as fuck.

Any pairing that's two white dudes who have never or barely interacted because the alternative ship (that actually has *some* sort of basis; they have an already established relationship of some sort, or have at least interacted a bunch) is one of those dudes with a non-white guy or a woman or, god forbid, a non-white woman, and of course we can't have that.

Kylux. I don't understand its appeal because I don't see anything even remotely romantic in their canon dynamic. It reads to me like Hux has all this buried resentment for Kylo and that he doesn't respect him.

Its popularity baffles me accordingly, but ship & let ship and all.

Can’t really think of any.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
There are some that are not to my taste, but I can’t think of any I don’t get. I’ve liked ships that are composed of:
A cannibalistic serial killer with someone in law enforcement that he’s tried to kill;
Siblings, from several different canons;
Teachers and their students;
Characters with their contemporaries’ parents;
Characters who have very little screen time together;
Characters who have no screen time together;
Characters who aren’t even in the same piece of media or franchise universe together (yay for crossover pairings);
Characters with huge age gaps (though if you go for humans with vampires or other long-lived beings like Immortals, Elves, Vulcans, Q, etc., that’s pretty inevitable);
And probably a few others that some people would get.

I think if you like a character and you like their interactions or perceived interactions with another character, that enough.

Rukia/Ichigo. I never saw anything in their relationship other than a really strong friendship.

Rafe/Sam from Uncharted 4. I mean, in the context of the canon, it's just... what???? HOW?

Snape/anyone. Especially Snape/Harry.

I agree with Draco/Harry, though even more so with Draco/Hermione. Don't get it at all.

Celebrimbor/Maeglin. It seems weirdly popular in the Tolkien fandom, and I just don't get it at all.

Canon ships. I mean I kind of understand, but they leave me entirely cold for fanworks, even if I like the pairing in canon.

Most of the time though I can understand why someone ships something even if I don't. I mean someone brought up Clint and Coulson, they're both kinda Crouching Dweeb Hidden Badass characters. Rival ships, hate ships, friendship ships, liking characters together because you just like the archetypes, liking that you can easily self-insert with a character. I can usually see a reason, even if it doesn't appeal to me.

Mycroft/Lestrade

I understand the "pair the spares" angle (although I've never felt the desire to pair any spares, so I don't get why people do) but I just... don't see it? Don't see why people want these two together?

Thranduil/Bard, and Solavellan - but mostly because I simply don't like Thranduil or Solas.

I started out in the HP fandom on Harry/Draco, but I wandered off into other pairings and when I came back to the fandom a few years later I was both more interested in het fic, and more canon had made Draco unappealing to me.

Just... nope, don't get it. They have no chemistry for me beyond friendship and loyalty.
