Use Tax

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Is bullshit.

Basically use tax means that if you buy something not made in the state you live in, you have to pay taxes on it anyways to the state. Even if you say...live in NY and visit Florida. You buy a set of gold clubs while in Florida and ship them back home. You are supposed to pay a use tax to NY for those clubs (plus the S&H of those clubs). Because you...use them in NY?

If you buy something NOT taxed in the state you live in (doesn't matter where it was made).

What happens if you don't report that tax?

If you paid cash then you get away without paying it. They only catch you if you use plastic or direct funds transfer, otherwise it is on the honor system.

For a business it's a state audit.

I don't understand use tax at all, but my state doesn't have it.

Ehhhhhh. I think it's good but they could probably have it only on big ticket items and be fine. But it is good to have a way to deal with differences in state sales tax and prevent a race to the bottom.

On my state's tax return, you have to report the total amount of internet purchases where there was no sales tax charged. I don't spend much online, so I just put down $500, since the tax penalty isn't too big and I know I didn't spend more than that. While I wouldn't say no to not paying that tax, I think it makes sense, since if I'd bought that stuff in a store, there woud have been sales tax charged. Use tax sounds nuts, though. You already paid a tax, just to a different state.

Not all states have the same sales tax, and there are some states with no sales tax. So you have, for instance, people in Washington and California who go to Oregon to buy cars, since there's no sales tax in Oregon.
